For the first time ever, I'm having issues emailing a client based in the UK. Their mail server says our primary domain's SPF record is incorrectly setup.

Anyone have recommendations on a good online tool to test if this is the case? I think their mail server is throwing this error incorrectly as we've not had issues before.

SPF is optional anyway, isn't it? Do you have anything on your DNS at the moment?

Check www.openspf.org for a link to test tools.

Lets see..

3bit.co.nz text = "v=spf1 mx a:mta.3bit.com ~all"

so you are allowed to send from the mx of 3bit.co.nz (googles inbound servers)
and the A record of mta.3bit.com (111.65.225.91)

BUT.. the mx is incorrect if you are SENDING email from googlemail.. it should be:

v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com a:mta.3bit.com ~all

You might want to change the ~all to -all when you get it right as well.

I was quite involved with SPF a few years ago :-)

btw: no one should reject emails with the ~all anyway. If you are sending from the wrong place (as defined in your SPF Record) and the service is rejecting you because of SPF they are doing wrong.

Send an email to sa-test@sendmail.net, it checks SPF, DKIM, SID and domain keys.

LennonNZ - thanks for your help, the new SPF record works like a champ. Noodles - that email address is very helpful keeping that one.
