Not sure if this is the right place to post this.

I am trying to access a UDAI. Unfortunately the domain has lapsed and the email on it is an old one and goes to someone not involved in the operation any more. Spoke to the registering organisation who said they can't change the email the UDAI goes to as the domain is not up todate.

Is there anyway around this other than paying to register the domain with the company.

Whose the domain registrar? Sounds like you could be dealing with a reseller.

Firstly you can renew the domain without the UDAI, and then it can be updated by the registrar, as you shouldn't need to login for it to be renewed. You should be able to send them proof on a letter head or something as proof, asking them to update the email address. eg if it is registered to a company, then on teh company letterhead signed by hte director as listed iby the companies office. Or a signed change of ownership form.
However if it is 'pending release' mode, you won't be able to register it again until it has been released back to the public which I believe is 90 days after expiry, so renewing is the only option.

Also wondering why you want the UDAI? If you are transferring it, the people you are transferring it to should be able to help, and provide you with this advice.

I would contact the registrar direct if you are dealing with a reseller. To find the registrar google search whois nz, and enter the domain in the whois lookup tool. If you can't resolve the problem, you can also contact the domain name commissioner at www.dnc.org.nz

It's tricky. Registrar won't want to transfer the email to anyone else because this could open a box of problems - even allowing someone else taking over a domain without being authorised to do so.

Is the domain released for purchase yet?

Pay the registrar for the renewal (you don't need the UDAI for this). Once it's up to date you can request the registrar update the email, then get your UDAI sent to your updated email. Easy(ish)

That is basically what I said, but it sounds like they could be having trouble with proving that they have permission to change the email address. Some registrars also may require you to login to renew it, and they may not have the login details as going to the old email address.

Yes looks as though I will have to renew. Then change the email address then ask for UDAI to change registrar. Was really hoping to avoid paying then then having to change registrar.

You could ask them to fax the UDAI, mail it, or ring the phone number (and verbally give your the UDAI) from the details given on the domains registrant contact details. eg you can transfer a domain in pending release mode, if you do have the UDAI, and not renew it before the transfer.

I second this advice, assuming that the domain name is actually registered to the correct entity. This scenario should be straightforward.

If a former staff member nominated themselves as the registrant - which is a common problem - then you are basically stuffed unless you can contact them and get them to sign their half of a change of registrant form.

Yes, I have seen that happen a lot, a staff member registers a companies domain name in their own name, and they then leave the company. Or the business changes ownership, and the details are not updated. I wish that there was more checking done by the registrars, and perhaps an annual requirement by the registrant to check that the contact details are correct, like there is for some international domains. It would probably increase the costs, but domain name ownership and accuracy of the information, is an important part of many businesses these days, so all details on the whois should be accurate
