Well maybe not now,

But was wondering running your own I.T service business is it a risk, like quitting your day job for it.

Like infrastructure deployment and managed services like looking after the infrastructure once its in production, or supporting existing infrastructure for small to medium business.


The biggest question is how do you get clients? I mean you cannot apply for these kinds of roles

Also when you decide to sell the business how much will it be worth etc?


also what is hot right now to offer as business that the industry is lacking?

Starting up is a huge job. Probably have to provide a better service and/or at a lower cost than the competition. You should look at what the current market is like and if there is even a demand. Possibly buying an existing company is the best place to start if you want to quit your job too.

I have not started the business yet, I just want to know the cons and pros of starting your own business.

It also depends where you are.
If you are in a smaller town/city then starting up may be a bit easier if the competition is only the same as you (small - one man band types of things). If you are going up against the big guys or lots of competition, be prepared to give a lot away and spend a lot before you make any.

I have been involved in the startup of what is now a franchised tech support business. The smaller areas the franchisees seemed to get up and running a bit quicker. Auckland took a while (but I htink has some decent traction now - 3 years on).

Find one big client who you can kick start with.  That'd be my advice.

How much is the rate now a days for managed services like look after a small infrastructure of about 50 users.

Most managed service providers offer fix cost (monthly fee) services now days. Base on per user and per servers etc... in order to be attractive you will have to be able to go lower than the bigger companies or offer something innovative than the competitors.

Start up would be difficult but i think the best bet is to gather a few like minded people with different skills set (including sales) and work from there. One man band I think will be far too stressful.
