Thanks for all the replies, some good info coming through.

I have had a look at crash plan and it does look good, but then the upload issue is a bit of a concern.

Off the top of my head I would imagine it would take approx 20 to 24 hours to upload 8 gb of data and I would question whether the connection (at the moment home based business) could even maintain a solid connection for that amount of time.

I will have a look at unRAID and see what that looks like.

If UFB was avaliable then these cloud/online solutions would be perfect.

I assume that the upload service connecting to CP allows for part uploads etc. It might be worth getting a trial account and trying it.

VDSL would be the best way to take this forward (with a max of 10Mbps) assuming fiber was not available.

Cheers

Yes. With CrashPlan, you can start and stop the backup/upload at any time. There's no need to wait until a certain file has finished uploading.

kiwitrc: Braaiguy, Couple questions, once the initial backup is done are subsequent backups just incremental?

Who makes the best Boerewors in NZ?

Once the initial backup is done, the rest are incremental, but only new or changed files are recopied.

As far as I understand nothing is deleted from the crashplan servers, ever. So even if you delete a file on your PC, it will always be available on the crashplan servers. Have never tried this out though, could be wrong.

As for Boerwors LOL. (just slightly off topic) Best is home made from friends. Otherwise Springbok Butchery in Tawa Wellington.
