Regs: i've done a couple of restores of exchange using the setup /m:recoverserver command on top of a new bare metal install of windows server. this command reads the exchange config from AD and restores it on the server. if you have a backup of the EDB files, then all the data (mailboxes) gets restored nicely too.

I have the EDB file, can I mount this manually into the restored Exchange server?

do you still have references to the databases in Exchange? If so I "think" you might be able to copy the edb files to the location where exchange thinks they are, run some eseutil commands against it (cant remember them, google but it checks your database and makes it mountable) and then mount them that way.

I believe I do, the "setup /m:recoverserver" command appears to have successfully reinstated these. I'm currently restoring the database and logs and reviewing the "Bringing the Restored Database to a Clean Shutdown State with ESEUtil" section fo this article http://exchangeserverpro.com/restore-individual-mailbox-exchange-2010

Recovery of Exchange 2010 server complete and databases restored. Leaned a lesson regarding the backups, i.e. VSS full is not the default. Changed my backups so that this is enabled and now Exchange is a registered application, along with the corresponding log commitment and clearing.

good to hear. Why not fire up another Exchange server and create a DAG? From your LAN diagram it would appear you have the resources.

gjm: good to hear. Why not fire up another Exchange server and create a DAG? From your LAN diagram it would appear you have the resources.

I have the resources but not the license, TechNet provides one standard and one enterprise, I believe DAG requires all to be Enterprise.

If you felt inclined you could use server 2012 if technet gave you more than one license for it. The feature set is the same between editions so you could use clustering on standard or datacentre edition. There is no enterprise of 2012.

Or you could just sit back and have some of those little Christmas mince pie things and enjoy the upcoming holidays :)
