mattwnz: You can get them retail from $15. The wholesale rate is wholesale rate if you are a registrar, but that doesn't cover things like staffings and support costs, software and servers etc. Also if a company is reselling them, their wholesale rate is likely to be quite a bit higher than that.

Who's offering them retail for $15? They're making no $ on it.

The (current wholesale from the DNC) for a .nz domain is $1.25/Month/Domain + GST. This does not change if the registrar has 100 domains or 10000 domains. So this comes out at $17.25 total price.

There are a number of overseas Registrars who buy them from the DNC and of course they don't pay GST to the DNC.

Then... they can sell them back to New Zealanders and you don't pay GST for the domain.. So.. you _can_ get the domains cheaper than $17.25 total Price.

freitasm: I've heard good things about IWantMyName. I currently use iServe for all NZ domains and GoDaddy for my non-NZ domains. Might transfer a bunch of domains out of iServe at some stage since they don't provide DNS (not a big deal, using Cloudflare for DNS is free).

I was with IWMN, but their dashboard is really poor, and you can't do glue records yourself. Moved to Metaname, which is vastly superior, and has great IPv6 support.

sleemanj: domains4less.co.nz are the cheapest for NZ I think, 19.95+GST, use them for quite a few nz domains myself and never had a problem with them.

If you type NZ domains into google, look for the top ad on the page that says $1 NZ Domains. Don't know how they can say they are $1, because they aren't, but they are $15 .

They must be bundled with something.. but saying that I cannot see anything in their website which sells them at $1. Yes they are $15 (which will be their cost).

If you look at the prices they charge for changing the domain ownership, or renewing a domain that has expired, you will see how they make some money back from them. I supect that they expect people to buy some form of hosting too, as a $15 domain comes with nothing else, and  you have to pay extra for DNS services.

We moved our stuff away after repeated issues including issues getting UDAI's. I'd personally avoid them.

Do they accept credit card payments?

Exactly what I'm thinking, if they are accepting payment via credit cards and selling at $15 a pop, they *are* losing money on every registration.

I just registered a new domain with them last night. $15 and all up and working within minutes.

I didn't even think about the UDAI, but there was an email in my inbox this morning with it. I already have hosting, DNS etc elsewhere, so I just ignored all the upsell extras, put in my custom name servers and done.

Mauricio, have you had to pay any renewal fees to iServe for .nz domain names lately?

The reason I ask is because I use iServe for about 100 domain names for my clients and not one of them has had their domain name expire in the last year or so.  Whenever a domain reaches the expiry date it just automatically gets extended by one month.  No "Your domain name is about to expire" emails are being sent out either.

I've contacted iServe (Orcon) about this and they acknowledged the problem and said they were looking into it, but that was a couple of months ago and it's still happening.

Not that I'm complaining, I like getting my domains for free! Laughing
