Now that I think about it, this mornings one was at 1pm, which may have been co-incidence with one of the backups. I believe 1am is the default time for either User Sync (FIM) or Search crawling?
mrdrifter: It's sounding pretty painful, I have multiple installs on 2012, but haven't experienced this. We have DPM running on a very large client site that hasn't exhibited any similar symptoms utilising the VSS engine. Must be something magical about that one particular combination.
Running SP2013 on windows server 2008 R2 with SQL Server 2008 R2 for a couple of days (under reasonable load, 5 apps, user profile sync, etc) is so far going well.
