Annnnd another one bites the dust...

3 out of 4 of these controllers have failed now and I don't think they are the same batch. We have a bit of a working hypothesis that perhaps they are overheating. We have 5x spares now so that should alleviate the stress!

So would switching to a Brand that doesn't have a 80% failure rate :)

Wow that is rough. Do those servers have worse airflow than normal? Is there a hedgehog on top of the card's processor chip? If not, I wonder if it is practical to retro-fit one. I'd be a little concerned about burning through those spares.

Presumably the OS is on the RAID so replacing the cards with a different brand is impractical?

Yea we are looking to switch brands but its a BIG move as you can imagine. Also considering all in one units e.g. HP but gotta figure whether its going to be that more reliable and whether the 4 hour SLA (and its price tag) is worth it compared to us doing it ourselves...

The cards do have heatsinks but 70 degrees still seems pretty hot. The case has an 80mm fan for the addon cards with a shroud with like 4 fans for the cpu. I'm thinking of removing the shroud. Will wait to see what LSI think of those temps.
