timmmay: I'd be interested to hear about your AWS Cloud Architect learning and certification, it's something I might be interested in.

Amazon is pouring a lot of money into education in NZ at the moment so I was able to get a full weeks worth of training and conferences, certification and 1-on-1 time with their architects for basically nothing. I found it well worth while as the training is just as applicable to other cloud providers and business systems as it is to AWS.

Sounds pretty good. What did you learn? How would someone else get access to this training?

Depending on the level of training you do, they cover:
- Cloud Systems Design (loosely coupled systems, queuing, messaging, stateless services, horizontal scalability, high availability etc)
- Exactly how to achieve the above on AWS from design to config;
- Loosely coupled systems using SQS and SNS
- Stateless Services and Horizontal Scalability using EC2 auto-scaling groups, load balancers
- High availability using Route 53, multi-AZ and/or multi-region deployment, S3 storage
- Batch processing using "Spot Instances" (cheap off-peak EC2)
- Data-warehousing and BI using RedShift
- Security and Access Control using security groups, firewalls, public/private subnets, VPN etc
..and a lot more
