Registering .com.au requires a company in Australia?

The fact that you want a .com.au makes them special

not cared about them....protecting my brand.

But you don't have a brand in Australia if you have no business there so nothing really to protect.

Its all in the pipeline.
Basically i cant do business with people from Australia from nz? Still doesn't make sense to me.

Why can't you do business? It's not hard for an Aussie to type .co.nz.

I have a customer with some .com.au domains because he thought it would provide a more local presence etc, however with all the hoops and troubles, he ended up just using the .com and it's made no difference in his opinion.

I think it is a good idea, as it means that you don't have the problem with overseas companies or scam ones, setting up websites using .nz domains, and people thinking they are a NZ company and legit. (There are many I have come across who use a nz domain like this.)But it means less revenue for people selling the domains, if they are restricted to a particular market. But in way I do wonder what the point of different country extensions, if anyone from any country can register them.

They do it to protect AU businesses, which is fair enough to a point.

When you say company rep....did you own the company or how does it work?

Was a clients company - was years ago tho so my memory might be a little fuzzy... but Im pretty sure we just used the sales rep in AU as the "company" there - used his address and details etc to sign up. I cant remember if the company had a registered business in AU or they used the reps personal company. I do remember there was a huge fight when the rep left a months later tho, he "owned" the domain. :)

I worked for a NZ company that got an ABN no. - there was no Aus company that I'm aware of, though we did have an Aus. office. As for the domain, we just used a .com.

Thanks everyone for your reply's.

Registering an AU company is another+-$400 , blah.
The biggest thing is protecting a brand.

Th last thing i want is to go to court over a domain name dispute, waste of money and time. Also dont want/need someone in Australia registering/opening up a company with the exact name i have here in NZ and with the .com.

Maintaining a brand is the probably the hardest thing nowadays and at the same time, the most important.

look at geekzone.com.au ....."design hosting support consultants". Not cool.

Being said, if there was 1 global company that looks after company names , a process similar to registering a trademark. This could have so many upsides... eg initiates creativity ( eg, not 20 companies called geekzone )

another example, look at facebook...they deal with this crap all the time.
