Regs: as sbiddle suggests, it sounds like duplex issue. I've seen that happen before. half duplex 10mbps perhaps. check *both* ends (if possible, ask ISP to check their end when connected) - it may 'say' 100auto on the sonicwall but be connected at 10half.

While it sounds like one at the end of the day Sonicwall routers are total pieces of junk. The first thing I do when I come across anybody running one if suggest they get a new router.

I'm surprised to hear you say that. We have about 60 of them deployed and this is the first really serious issue we have had with them. Support quality has dropped off recently, but overall I still consider them good. What do you recommend as replacements?

could the problem be the isp's backhaul, between Wellington and Auckland.

Another brand (much cheaper) works at full speed. I am pretty sure it's not a duplex issue, as we did try a 100Mbit switch between the SW and the ONT. (I didn't have a GB One handy).

Biggest problem is they're the most VoIP unfriendly device you'll ever come across. Their aggressive UDP session timers and ability to break VoIP are world class.

As for recommendations it depends what your requirements are, there isn't a one size fits all router.

Reduce the MTU of the physical and PPPoE interface? Does it do any clamping?

One thing you could try without changing anything on the router is change the MTU of a computer to say 1400 and then try.. if this helps then some kind of MTU/MRU has to be changed on the router.

One thing you could try without changing anything on the router is change the MTU of a computer to say 1400 and then try.. if this helps then some kind of MTU/MRU has to be changed on the router.

The list of things we have tried is exhaustive, we have changed the MTU.

With an identical router, with the Wellington routers settings, tried on another same speed UFB connection, we can get 6MB/s, but in Wellington it's 2.5MB/s and nothing else.

Swapped routers, tried everything. The weird thing is, even changing from DPI to SPI made 0 difference, we have altered every setting in the device at some stage during troubleshooting, and still no difference. Basically no matter what we do we can't break the 2.5MB/s

Not in Wellington, but in Auckland we have tried a second option, so making 3 brands on 2 connections... It seems to be SW specific at this stage.
