These days, not really. With SNI you can have multiple SSL certs on one server. I host a bunch on a single IP and it works fine. All free StartSSL certs.
Only really a problem for people on really old Android phones or still using IE or Safari on Windows XP
mattwnz: Depends on the host, but withe NZ shared hosts I use, they all need dedicated IPs and charge a lot for installation. So the certificate itself is a very small cost.
