I use OneDrive but also have Crashplan. OneDrive keeps my laptop and tablet in sync, while Crashplan protects the content from loss.

Broadly speaking, this is the same solution stack I use. Unfortunately staff at many of the sites I've visited recently believe that they don't require an additional formal backup solution as their files are securely backed up in the cloud using OneDrive/Dropbox/etc. just like they use at home. As we all know, IT solutions architecture for an enterprise can be quite different from a home user!

Thanks for that. My CrashPlan subscription was about two weeks away from expiring, so that worked out well.

Yeah, mine also expired in about a week. Great timing. Mind you, I initially made the jump to Crashplan because there were having a similar special around black Friday a few years ago so that would explain the timing.

Although I have just signed up for another year of CrashPlan, there is a very good chance the service will be cancelled in the near future. I have no confidence in their ability to deliver a native client, and 600MB or RAM per terrabite of data in the backup means only my i7 has the ability to backup my RAID, while I actually want this taken care of by a virtual machine.

Probably the best service I've found in terms of features next to CrashPlan is SOS Online Backup (http://www.sosonlinebackup.com), and it's only $US44.99 for the first year (25% off) if you search for a referral link. The client has some rough edges, such as not brining up the backup status window again if you close it during a backup, and while you can restore to a specified date, I don't think it lists historic versions of files (not investigated thoroughly). There is no real time file system monitoring, but I don't need that feature. The major drawback is if you switch computers, there is no optoin to adopt an old backup. It seems to use the hostname during installation as the ID for the computer, so that may be a way around that limitation. They also have a data centre in Melbourne, but where the data is stored is automatic, and my trial backup ended up going to Texas. Despite this, my upload speed once it started processing my larger files, was 21Mbs^-1, more than double the best throughput of CrashPlan to Sydney, and almost three times the typical speed I'm seeing on CrashPlan.

Another option I am considering, even if not the cheapest, is Cyphertite (https://www.cyphertite.com/), $US10 per month. This option is definitely not for everyone, but the fact that it's command line based, and can run on FreeBSD (there is a basic Windows client with a GUI) means I can script the backups to do exactly what I need. I believe, although haven't yet tested, that the incremental backups only compare file dates and size, which is ideal when I have a RAID to backup which would take about two days just to read the data. Presently waiting on a reply from their support staff regarding their interpretation of 'fair use', which is stated as 20TB (but not currently enforced) for my CrashPlan service. Data centre is in Chicago, peformance not yet tested.
