ronw: I wonder why NZ companies seem so expensive compared with overseas ones. Maybe market is too small.

Small market, high staff costs, very high data center costs both power and connectivity.

And even on the non cheap local ones, service tends to lack compared to others. That "small business" mentality is rife among IT places.

I have been using web hosting from namecheap.com recently which is working well ($10usd a year after coupon) or there are australian hosting providers like netorigin,ventraip which are reasonably priced.If you can setup and manage your own server then get a cheap yearly vps from lowendbox.com, digitalocean.com offers a free $10 credit if you want go down that route.

Godaddy has one of the worst, most confusing websites on the planet. Achieving anything is confusing and difficult and there are constant unnecessary upsells. The one time I used technical support I found them pretty much useless.

Agree. I just left GoDaddy after being with them quite some time. Next to no support. I moved to 2mhost.com who seems comparable price wise/better and their support is via live chat and appears to be instant 24/7.

timmmay: Domain registration and hosting should be independent. I wouldn't deal with a firm that required you have buy both services from them.

For cheap hosting I recommend either Hostgator or VentraIP. I've had a good experience with both. VentraIP are Aussie based and have a cheapo plan AU$5 per month which I think would work well for what the church needs. Have been using them for my Aussie clients who prefer local hosting and haven't had any complaints.

Just as a matter of interest, if someone wanted to stay with local hosting (more to do with promoting myself as a NZ business) who is in the cheap/reliable category? At the moment I pay $50/mth+GST, mainly to get reasonable bandwidth (100GB was at the high end of the market when I set it up), but most of my bandwidth (200GB+/mth) is now served through Cloudfront, so my requirements are a lot more low-end -- Wordpress/Woocommerce, email, probably 3GB storage/20GB bandwidth locally tops. My current plan is starting to look a little dated and expensive. Plus I recall paying them for support on top recently.

My local usage will stay minimal, whereas this year I may end up having 20GB stored on AWS, and 300GB/month through Cloudfront (flight simulator scenery). I have considered going 100% through AWS, but I'm not that confident that I could manage any issues. And as I said, I'd rather give at least some of my money to a local host.

Looking at some NZ$10 -- $20 plans at the moment, am I on the right track?

You have to consider reliability as well, AWS will trump that. I'd be happy to help out with AWS stuff if you'd like to consider that, I'm an Amazon AWS certified architect but I haven't done much with it for my day job.

1stdomains is $100 a year, it's fantastic, and honestly, if you can't afford $100 a year, not sure how you are surviving in business, even charitable.
