Yep - the PCs just backup to a 'folder' on my home server, and Crashplan running on the home server backs up these folders to the cloud.

Backup of a Crashplan special folder is not safe.

Have you tested a restore from a restore of this folder?

Crashplan is who I had heard of before. Thanks, I shall look into them and then figure out what I need to backup and what isn't required
That will probably involve a serious reconfiguration of my storage space

I currently use Backblaze and don't have a fibre connection so not keen to reseed with another provider.
If I did though I would be interested in trying Arq: https://www.arqbackup.com/

It's a one of purchase and then you can backup to any service you want (Dropbox, Google Drive, Glacier, Amazon S3). If you use Amazon S3 it works out way cheaper than Crashplan/Backblaze.

The client gets great recommendations online. Has anyone tried it?

You'll have to do as I do and set up copy/sync jobs to the central server. Or get a family plan.

Yep - I used to run rsync/robocopy or something a while ago that did all this. Will start investigating...just liked how easy it was to install and run Crashplan on each laptop.

Just goes to show, you MUST test your backup solutions! I had tested my local server restores but never on one of my laptops.

Shame on me!

Haha! This thread just prompted me to test my CrashPlan backups again.
Just restored a 22GB archive file in about 30 mins and am able to open it no problems. :)

+1 for Crashplan!

Versioned backups are essential, with mirrors corruption spreads quickly. Crashplan does versioned backups.
