dan: well, the main difference compared to other routers in this scenario,  is if they shutdown / close access to the "cloud" control panel, its going to leave owners of the mako unable to make any changes to their mako, produce any reports etc

that back end system is still online at the moment, if it doesn't stay that way its going to be a big problem for there customers

Yet another reason to be cautious when considering "cloud" solutions.

michaelmurfy: From what I know this is very bad news for a couple of roll-outs that have just happened. I know of many more (large) ongoing projects taking place at the moment with Spark and don't see any other product fit for the purpose of what they're trying to use them for. Honestly I'd say that Spark will be the ones who will have to do something about it as they've got some very massive contracts out there.

On the other hand Gen-i bought IP form Mako Networks back in February 2014, which means those roll-outs may not be as impacted as some believe.

Yeah Telecom SecureME is one of the few ways of small sites connecting to the Health Network
Perhaps they could migrate to providing a Meraki MSP service would be quite nice (could also supply wifi etc as value add)
At the end of the day (for the Health network) they just need a way of centrally managing an IPsec tunnel and firewall rules

nathan: a phoenix always obtains new life by arising from the ashes of its predecessor

Well legally it should be forbidden from any party who had a part to play in it's original downfall taking part in it's rising, if money was still owed to others.

McClean Computing ran itself into the ground, went into receivership, to have it's previous Directors bring it back to life at the expense of the people who it owed money. This type of thing is disgraceful and should be illegal.

phoenix companies are actually illegal

it does not help at all when investigations into the wrongdoing are sometimes being hampered by those overseeing the liquidation...

Loopholes exist, hence McClean rising. They need to close these loopholes.

Sadly none of the staff received final pay, we had a meeting at 4:30pm and Bill Farmer said "We are sorry but we're closed" and proceeded to leave us with the liquidation company telling us that we would not receive wages due on Monday and any outstanding holiday pay we should receive if the liquidation company found some money.

dan: have some 3rd party info from others partners who deal with mako networks via their account managers, that some auckland staff received there final pay and that is it they are done there

some other info:

the cloud control system is apparently fully in the US now no longer in Albany/Auckland
the US side of the operation it is apparently to keep running for usual now  (take with a grain of salt)

-
Also the mako system is one of the solutions that Spark Digital sell under their Secureme brand

I bet the directors made sure they had any money owed to them paid out before they put the company into liquidation.

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

Was reading your post and was about to say "What about Macleans!" then saw you did. What they did was super duper shady - though the also lost any chance of doing business with any IT supplier in Auckland from what I understand.

It was a shame - Mr Maclean senior was a hell of a nice guy, his son not so much.

They are now owned by Noel Leeming Group I believe.

Heh I don't have much regard for Mcclean senior either to be fair.

I wouldn't bet your money on the fact that IT distributors won't do business with them, they had accounts with lots of places within days. Shocked me really.

Just to be clear, in February 2014 Spark Digital (then Gen-i) brought the SecureMe service in-house. We did this by acquiring rights to the relevant IP from Mako Networks who initially developed the technology, hiring a small number of Mako staff who supported it, and running the SecureMe servers within Spark Digital’s high resiliency Auckland data centre.

Because the SecureMe service has been ring-fenced and run independently from Mako Networks, the liquidation will have no impact on our SecureMe service.

Which is pretty close to what I inferred before.

Thanks for the clarification.

What will happen when SecureMe customers need to have a firewall replaced or upgraded?
