If you want to use Outlook and plan to grow your business - Office 365.

If you want to use webmail and are going to be a sole trader for a long, long time - Google Apps.

G Suite, because having used both, the webmail UI wins. If you want better support, go with a local IT company re-seller.

G Suite for sure

It's easier to administer and everything is straightforward and easy to setup, like DKIM etc

One thing I like is the image proxy Google have so emails auto display images without revealing your personal IP

If office 365 has all the spam issues as hotmail (incorrect flagging and letting stuff through) I could never recommend it. Buy I havny tried it myself so just what I've read about it

I have a Microsoft account with an @outlook.com email address. That account now fetches POP3 mail from a legacy mail.com account. The amount of junk that Outlook.com puts into my mailbox is unbelievable. I have to agree with Leo from Twit.tv, Google just handles SPAM / junk like a pro. I'd have Google filter all my mail and then only forward the remaining clean mail to my server.

Just to be clear, my Microsoft account is linked to a personal Office 365 subscription. Maybe if I had my domain / business account with O365 things would be different?

Outlook.com is not Office 365 Exchange. The amount of control on Office 365 is incredible.

You can still buy the "free" Google gsuite accounts from eBay and similar. YMMV but I've been running my gsuite free domain for years and it works well especially if youhave Android phones.

Exchange online's spam filter good (good enough not to be a pain point, in my experience), but I feel that gmails is better by a decent margin (without configuring anything).

I recently setup two separate O365 accounts where I had to use powershell to enable DKIM because it was broken in the exchange administrator gui

I wouldn't use gmail as a primary email for work. Don't like the calendar, address book or task list.

I use the full-office version of exchange, which easily beats gmail for across the board functionality. I haven't tried 365

That is an interesting feature. Is this advertised somewhere? I don't recall reading about this feature anywhere.

Would be surprised if Microsoft haven't implemented something like this.

I am currently on O365 E1, I think realistically the toss up is between WorkMail and O365.
WorkMail looks like a really nice product, though is still quite immature. It does basic email, contacts, calendar (and tasks!) which is the main thing I need - and of course activesync.

The price difference between Gmail and O365 is only about NZ$10 a year, so not exactly a big reason to move for a single mailbox.
I do prefer the way Google support aliases and send as aliases, but this isn't a big thing for me at the moment.

I think I will renew my E1 plan with O365 for now and will keep an eye on WorkMail.

On a side note, I do wish Google would give their webmail client a new look... it feels very dated, having not really changed for a number of years now.

Interesting - I have DKIM setup on my domain and all it required was a few clicks... but that was a few months ago, so maybe they broke the control panel recently.

From an application developers point of view I find the Google's API easier that the Office 365. But from a productive point of view, migrating from an on-site Exchange Server to Office 356 was more intuitive and the office staff like having the up-to-date versions of Office products.

+1 to this although I raise an eyebrow at the "grow your business" aspect of it

I use both. I choose GMail for all my personal stuff and have used at companies before too. My current employer uses O365. If you're a heavy MS user and want the familiarity then O365. If you're happy to look across the fence then I'd favour GMail. My main reason is the search functionality. If you take a little time to look at the features that has and how to really drive it then you soon realise its streets ahead of the competition. I should add I use the web client for O365 - maybe Outlook as gotten better here.

Now...with regards to my comment about eyebrow raising... if you do grow your business and start wanting to do online direct collaboration with your colleagues I think the GSuite wins here too. The first time you start updating a document or spreadsheet at the same time as someone else who isn't sat with you its enlightening. Especially if youre chatting to them at the same time (on Hangouts/Skype/Whatever). Or even not! Google have really nailed this whereas Microsoft aren't quite there yet.

Like others have said; if you're an Android user (I am too) then as you might expect the integration there is awesome too. To be fair, the MS apps that I've used on Android are nice. Once again, Google are simply a little ahead here.

Office 365 has the same functionality - and not only on browser but also with Office desktop applications.
