NZ Domains will eventually be put through this process as well I believe. I'm sure I saw a draft proposal a few years back.

Having your contact details current on a domain should be a requirement for a variety of reasons including the prevention of fraud, and the ever-present threat of the person details for the domain being incorrect so renewal notices aren't actioned.

Pretty common for .nz registrars to offer .com and other TLDs through a wholesaler, just some do a better job than others when it comes to 'white labeling' things like the ICANN verification emails.

Not uncommon for this to raise suspicion with domain owners, as this ICANN policy was only introduced in late 2016.

Yep, I've been down this road. I bought my .net domain from registrar A, then later got a fairly dodgy-looking email from registrar B demanding that I update my details or my domain will be deactivated. I deleted the email, and a few months later my domain randomly stopped working.

I ended up moving it to a different registrar.

This was neither the fault of provider A nor B but rather ICAAN. Changing providers will still result in this process being undertaken periodically and is actually for YOUR benefit as if there is an important issue re your domain, having current contact details, ensures they can communicate this to you effectively.

Well, yes and no? ICANNs job is to create and maintain 'good' domain policy. They do work with the registrars and give advanced warning about policy changes. The responsibility is then on the the individual registrars to implement user tools and features to meet the new policy requirements in way that suits their customer base (we saw this here with IRPO). Some registrars have a big focus on domain wholesale/reselling and hence have enabled the white labeling of the verification / notification emails.

The NZ registrar using an international wholesaler, then has a responsibility to establish a relationship with a 'good' registrar. In the case of new policies, you can see how the NZ registrar isn't in the best position to just move all domains and re-write APIs to use another wholesaler without a fairly large disruption.

The parent company maintain a number of their own ICANN accreditations. The problem is, it's a pain for a registrar to move the domain from an upstream/reseller to their own accreditation. When it's due for renewal, just discuss with Freeparking that you'd like it to be moved onshore and they can advise. My guess is they'd recommend to move it to Openhost.
