"hate speech" labeling has been used to try and block reasoned debate, block opposing veiws, block satire .

censorship doesnt take long to be miss-used .

Are you suggesting that legions of crazed shooters opening up on random gatherings is not a form of misuse? There has been more than enough freedom of hate speech. It is way past time to redress the balance!

The problem is that some people think that mocking them for believing in a certain sky fairy is hate speech, but those same people think that mocking people for their forms of entertainment is totally fair and reasonable speech.

If your going to protect people for their religion, then I want the same punishment going to the person that hassles a kid because they still play pubg and not fortnite.

First they came for the torrent sites
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a torrent site user

Then they came for the pirate streaming sites
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a pirate streaming site user

Then they came for the hate speech sites
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a hate speech site user

Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me

Sad day for the internet, sad day for free speech.

Worth reading Matthew Prince's (CEO of Cloudflare) blog on why he felt the needed to do this

On mobile, so no TL;DR sorry :)

Interesting, and he has a fundamentally flawed view that the rule of law should apply to the internet. It is _meant_ to be an anarchic wild west, it was largely built by civil libertarian hippies :-)

I believe there are numerous flaws in your reasoning and that of other unrestricted free speech advocates. I was one of those 'civil libertarian hippies' but I have changed my views. First, there is no such thing as free speech. There never has been. Even in the USA there have always been curbs on free speech. But I have long believed in keeping speech as free as possible. Now I have shifted the line.

Even anarchists need rules of some kind. When there are no limits, things quickly implode. What I long believed was that any rules should come from within, not be imposed by some external authority. I made my own rules, based on my own standards of fairness and decency.

What is killing free speech are those who abuse it to spread poisonous ideas. As a direct result, random people are dying at the hands of weak-minded individuals who take inspiration from this bile. That is why sites like 8chan and Stormers and many others need to be shut down, which I am all in favour of. I don't care whose civil rights get trampled on. Being murdered by a madman at your church or concert or shopping centre is also a fairly major violation of your civil rights. Free speechers have shown themselves to be incapable of applying even minimal standards of behaviour to themselves. They have only themselves to blame for the current clampdown.

The only free speech you can have is in your head.  And even then you can question it......

The ultimate denial of freedom of speech is taking someones life, maybe some should think about that for a bit.

I'd rather live in a world where people can speak their mind than not, no matter how repugnant I find what they say, and I don't think suppressing speech will stop a single death, if anything it might cause more. We will always have hatred, zealots, madmen and misguided fools, and driving them underground makes it harder to spot them and fuels their paranoia.. I just can't see that having good results.

Lias:

Ironically your post is a godwins law violation ;  ).

torrent sites

pirate streaming sites

This was and is a copyright overreach issue. How was speech affected?

hate speech sites

These were not government or policing decisions. How does a purely commercial decision by one single caching provider affect speech?

where they can be monitored , being out in the open .
They are preaching to the converted . Talk and typing is just that, talk and typing.
The non crazies wont be reading their rants, so honestly whats the issue here.

Do you honestly believe the CHCH massacre wouldnt have happened if he didnt have facebook or 8chan  access for his rants.

Its a slippery path to go down.
Free (non hate) speech is allready being censored ,by those with opposing veiws, so why make that worse .

The all blacks haka is seen as offensive by many .
Ban everything to do with that , including the test matches. Start there .

Even with free speech, I find it impossible to understand what anyone actually says on 8chan.

The ironic thing about the free speech argument is that those who call most loudly for free speech are the same people who would deny it to any others. The ideal of the white nationalists, the neo-nazis, the fascists demanding the right to spew their poison without restriction, is to dress everyone up in uniform and have them all march in unison spouting the party line. The last thing authoritarians want is free speech for anyone other than themselves. I cannot fathom why anyone with libertarian beliefs would want to associate themselves with rows of mindless goose-stepping marionettes marching to the tune of a Mussolini or Kim Jong-un. There is a serious disconnect here.
