Jogre:

Realistically 365 would be the same as on-premises in terms of bandwidth, majority of emails should leave the organisation so they're subject to the same constraints regardless of hosting solution. I have had a similar number of customers running email in 365 off ADSL with a slightly better upload speed, where it ground to a halt was when they also decided to drop SBS and move to SharePoint on the same circuit.

No not quite, Once users mailboxes are in Exchange Online, everyone's Outlook is now syncing with and actively polling Exchange Online, instead of an on-premises server, this increases bandwidth.

Email is still transiting into the network, difference being is that it is not collecting in a mailbox database on-prem before going to Outlook clients. Polling traffic bandwidth to check for emails awaiting deliver is miniscule compared to the emails themselves.

Its setup & seems to be working ok, usable at least.

Because they have approx 10 pc's onsite, sharing the bandwidth, every now & then available upload bandwidth/speed grinds to a halt
Ive see Outlook struggling to sync when that happens  . Luckily ,for most users there is minimal email traffic.

With their bandwidth, there was no way I could import old email into 365 , I just added old email as a pst .

Talking through email setup on phones is going to be a nightmare for a few. :-)

You can take the PST off site and import into office 365 for them.

I have done that on more than one occasion.
