Does Vendor2 cloud based service even use a MSSQL server database?
You may have given them a MSSQL backup, but they may have imported this into some other type of database that better suits their cloud based application.

 

 

Vendor2 doesn't use MSSQL. Data was imported into Vendor2 from the CSV's provided by vendor1.

 

Only reason we want the MSSQL export is to continue running the legacy purchased software as it was being run up until March.

Vendor1 (thick client application) uses MSSQL. Want to keep running this locally as an archive of patient records.

So are you wanting a copy of the original SQL Server DB that was on prem or the one that was on Vendor 1's infrastructure. Or are you after a SQL Server version of Vendor 2's database in the old schema?

If Vendor 2 did a migration to a new database/platform then I dont think you can reasonably ask them to provide a SQL Server backup in old schema without paying. Data migration is generally one way and they wouldve quote based on that.

If Vendor 2 is providing CSV exports then thats fair albeit a bit useless. You cant accuse them of vendor locking if they are willing to provide you with your data.

However if its the newer Vendor 1 database (the one on Vendor 1's infrastructure) that you are after and you say that you are licensed till March then there should be no reason why they shouldnt give it to you.

Ok, yeah thats pretty unreasonable if you have an existing licensing agreement till March. Was Vendor 1's thick client app written for you specifically or is it a product?

Vendor1 thick client is just an old off-the-shelf product.

Sorry for the confusion about March. They were using the (purchased) desktop version until March 2020 (lockdown) then were convinced to move to online hosted one. At this stage they were advised by vendor 1 that getting their data off the hosted one would be easy.
