Zalman, it depends what domain name you're after. For NZ-specific ones, ie. a .nz domain, you have to register it with an NZ registrar I think - I use www.discountdomains.co.nz - been with them for a few years with no hassles. There is a slight limitation with their DNS adjustment pages but I can't exactly remember what it was - maybe MX records perhaps? Can't remember - probably not something you need to worry about! Just keep all your mail and web material hosted on the same place and you'll be sweet.

If you have a .com, .net, etc you have a larger number of registrars to choose from.

Android user, software developer, a semi-typical (not a gamer) geek, and a Bernese Mountain Dog nut!

Hi there justin
Only problem is that my father inlaw has not long gone to telstra
He did say if I recommend it he will pay the termination and go with telecom
but I dont really think doing all that just for a domain and hosting with telecom is worth it
your more than welcome to PM me and convence me otherwise

I'm sure you would still be able to use this service without being a Telecom customer for home phone and internet...
I'm sure the Telecom option would be one of the simplest.

That is Correct, you do not need to have services with Telecom, you do need an account number to be able to register on the Hub though.

Zalman, Sounds like Justin will be able to get you set up and answer any queries you may have regarding the Telecom option. This is probably a good way to go for many reasons, I'm sure Telecom has great support and if need be you could always ping Justin here on geekzone if you get stuck.

just couple of things to consider, ... one is scalability and the other is the ease of migration once you have outgrown your requirement :) because migration = downtime.

So are you saying I would need a plan that well exceeds our needs at the moment?
is it not a easy process to change plans or provider?

I've just skimmed the thread and didn't notice anyone asking your budget. If you're trying to do things on the cheap then the above advice is all good. But I believe that to get the most benefit from a business website you probably need to have it professionally designed. A designer will likely suggest a content management system and may help you get your head around it. You can pay anywhere from 1 to 10 grand, but I'd recommend spending around 2. (Don't look at my site, I designed it myself and I'm clearly not a web designer)

I'd also recommend shopping around for a registrar, host and designer separately. I've seen friends tie themselves into combo deals and end up paying much more than necessarily.

Hi there price isnt really to much of an issue but for a small bussiness it would be silly to blow a hole lot of money on a website when most of his work is coming through other means to this point any way.
He was just talking about starting up a website as everybody has one these days. So I jumped on the bandwagon and said I would do it. I see all of your points but at this stage im interested in learning about designing one and learning the processes involved so its a great opotunity for me to have a play around. I think in 12 months time and the website is becoming a strong part of bussiness then sure get someone to design it, who knows maybe in a year I can design a great website. Anyway thanks for all everyones help and suggestion. looking forward to starting a new project.

Have you looked at open host? They have free access to site builder http://www.openhost.co.nz/sitebuilder/ and hosting from $6.99 per month.

I just built my site on site builder, there isn't too much to learn for a non techie like me. It's not the prettiest site in the world but it does the job. (www.neilwebster.co.nz)
