Anyone know exactly what versions of MYOB have been affected by this problem?

I actually had a customer service problem too, regarding MYOB first accounts, where they had a free downloadable update available to upgrade it to the latest version (eg from 3.0, up to 3.2). Then later when I went back to the website to download it, their website had changed, and the update was no longer avaliable. When I contacted them about it, they said I needed to upgrade to the latest version, which would mean spending a lot of money.

The 1910 date issue with MYOB cashbook affects all versions of MYOB cashbook that are older than the 2007 release. MYOB is releasing a free upgrade for the cashbook program to the 2007 version which does not have this date issue in it. This is not a purpose built time-bomb built into the program but a date issue relating to how years in a two digit format are treated.

Except for that whole monthly subscription thing.

I'm a Quickbooks user (and to try and relate to the topic, poster #1 I'd recommend looking at Quickbooks over MYOB, in my opinion, it's far superior, the only reason MYOB is popular is because they got there first and tied in the accountants).

I'd love to give Xero a go mainly because I like the idea of possible automation through a published API (and I dream of an integrated customer accessible interface so customers can look at their statements, invoices and balance payable at any time), but...

  1. No offline, stop paying, or they go out of business, no accounts access.
  2. Quite expensive comparatively for small businesses (my Quickbooks is several years old, it does what it needs to do).
  3. I'm not convinced of the web based nature of things, I think I'd have to try it, but when I'm working in quickbooks, I have lots of different reports, accounts, item lists etc.. different windows open at the same time so I can refer to different things, is that really workable in a web browser with Xero's AJAX nature?
  4. No import (or export) of Quickbooks, so it's a major task to "try it out" with real world stuff, and if it doesn't work out, it's a major task to go back to Quickbooks again.

Admittedly, I suppose I have more of an accountant's view of things than the average person (I'm not an accountant, just closer to one than average) so perhaps Xero isn't really aimed at me... but still.

The perceived value between accounting products is very interesting. To pay 99 dollars for an upgrade for a product you bought five years ago for less than 200 dollars some people consider to be a travesty. However paying $600 per annum in subscription fees for an online product is considered to be very reasonable. If you had paid that for five years you are starting to get into the thousands.

I know that Xero has a much larger range of features than cashbook but there is a price for that.

But again it goes back to how much your time is worth to you. For example if someone charged $100 per hour and one accounting package required that they spend an extra hour each week to do the accounts, that's $5,200 in lost earnings each year. Ofcourse the person would probably just work that extra hour to make up for it, but for me I'd rather be doing other (non-work) things.

I get value out of Xero, and it's less frustrating than the other packages I've used (I also tried out Quickbooks). I spend a lot of each day fixing software bugs, I'd rather not have another things using up my frustration quota each day.

Bang on for me too. My time / frustration saved is well worth the monthly subscription. I used to dread doing my accounts and leave them to the last possible moment.. now it's no sweat.

I guess that in my case it's better the devil you know. After five years I have all the codes set up the way I want them and I can enter data into MYOB with my eyes (almost) closed. The thought of having to learn another accounting programme like QuickBooks is a little daunting. As for Xero... I've had a play with their demo and it looks great, but it's the cost that really puts me off.

I spoke to a friends wife who is an accountant. She said most people don't really know how to use MYOB because it really requires some accounting knowledge - even accountants don't like it.

Once it's set up nicely (I guess a lot of accountants do this for their clients) it's pretty easy to enter data. I know that the interface could be more intuitive but by now it's familiar and I'm happy again.
