man for something so simple theres not a lot out there, can anyone advise of anything that does reporting? I'm tempted by this webmin thing that has squid included has anyone tried that? Or squidguard?

Squid Coupled With Dans Guardian Should do it?

We run ISA at work and have done since 2000 and never had a issue with it

Dans Guardian looks good, what do you recommend I do about the reporting?

I've had pleasant experience with Awstats - it is possible to report on quid proxy logs with that as well, HOWEVER, you do need to have perl installed, and my experience in trying to get perl running without thinking on Windows has been pretty ... unrewarding.

They are good enough for casual SMB use I guess but I wouldn't run a mission critical business internet connection on something like that or on something free.

Just google the names of some of the above and then click on features and/or screenshots for an idea of what they do.

hmm for something simple it's almost worth buying webtitan, getbusi or mail marshal or something. I kind of thought there would be better free stuff available, rather than writing scripts that deal with the squid logs for reporting i think its just easier to pay the money upfront and get some flashy proxy that has graphical reporting through a web interface and all that. I think i'm just going to get them to pay for one :(

That's odd because the pretty much all have access restriction, web proxy, traffic stats and captive portal type features in them:

Example:

* Traffic stats, including per interface and per IP totals for weeks and months
* Web proxy for accelerated browsing
* POP3 email proxy with Anti-Virus
* IM proxy with realtime log viewing
..etc

However you will probably get a more advanced feature set which is easier to use with a paided product.

:-) I appreciate the help but interface based traffic stats is not a feature of a proxy server (ie it will just give an idea like 500mbit exgress on eth0 in the past x hours) and the access restrictions from what I can tell are route based firewall rules (sessionless access lists). Which is similar to denying http access to a group of websites on a cisco router and then going around saying you have a proxy server

It does have web caching though :-) But in my opinion I think their marketing department has got a bit ahead of themselves which is a bit cheeky of them
