As with everything you get what you pay for. It sounds like you probably went for the cheaper NZ web hosts, as all the NZ hosting providers I have used in NZ have been excellent, and their support has been comprehesive. However I am prepared to pay a reasonable price. I have found with these cheap international hosts, their email replies tend to be single liners, or a few words, that are unhelpful to say the least. The level of support is one of the most important things, as is reliability. Price usually comes 3rd. ALso choose one that has been around for at least 3 years, as they can disappear overnight, especially these ones that just popup from nowhere.
