it has been ages since i used Joomla and last time it was a nightmare to intergrate (talking 5 years ago now).

But looking at the site now it has come a long way and could well be the best option for you.

If you have shared hosting you should find they have 1 click install as well already set up.

Yes that looks like a decent tutorial.

Although its one version out of date - you should use version 1.6.

You may want to consider wordpress or silverstripe CMS's, as they are relatively easy to setup and use. I am not a fan of joomla, as I have seen so many get hacked, although wordpress websites are also getting hacked alot now to. That is mainly due to the developer not regularly updating the CMS, and on shared hosting it is even more important. Therefore you also need to build into your cost, that you will need to update the CMS regually for your client, and they will need to build that into their budget. If they don't have the budget for that, a static website is the most secure, as they don't need patching.

Hi, thanks for your reply.

I was originally going to use wordpress but i cant find any good tutorials about moving a static website into wordpress and the ones i have found it looks difficult.

Now im just confuzed, wordpress, joomla or custom cms. hmmmmmm

The website is purely for promotion and there isnt alot of functionality to it

You may just want to leave it static, if it isn't going to be changed too often, and you don't waat to have to worry about patching it in the future with security updates. Alternatviely you could go for a hosted solution such wordpress.com and there are several others too. But I probably wouldn't reinvent the wheel, as there are so many good CMS system out there and they are mostly free to use.

i wouldnt bother doing a custom CMS, unless you're doing something that is a completely custom website that has specific needs, and data entry.

converting a basic website to wordpress, joomla, drupal can easily be done in a day. they're made to be easy, basically just creating a theme for those based on your site. and by using them you get access to plugins available, eg visitor stats etc.

personally i would just convert it to wp and be done with it. quick and easy. theres load of tutorials on the net how to do it.

EDIT: i converted my site (reven.co.nz) from a custom asp.net web app, to a drupal site in about 2 days, then to a wordpress in about 1 day. (didnt like drupal). afterwards i just spent a few days writing a few plugins to tweak the performance (js/css minificiation/combining)

yeah its really quite easy, i had never used wordpress before i converted my site.

just make a copy of the standard theme and go from there.

everything is broken down into php files, eg header.php, footer.php.

Don't do it yourself. Unless you really know how to code well, you will probably leave security holes and other such things in the code. Use something that has a good security track record (kinda rules out Wordpress imho!) and can be easily updated.

That was more a poke at Wordpress than me being really serious. Wordpress would be perfect for what you're after. Just be sure to keep up to date with the security patches.

Not sure I agree, as all you are doing is changing the themes files and CSS. You aren't actually modifying the CMSs backend files.
