Yes, been getting quite a bit of that. Boys not reading instructions, who knew! :) We've recently tested them with holes as small as 9.18mm (they are supposed to be 9.5) and they still go in as long as you follow the tips here.

We have small 4-pack samples bags out there that are marked 'NOT FOR RESALE' and they are too small for printing the instructions on so we've been relying on people watching the videos. Might have to make a smartphone app for the guys in the field??

Hell,even the bag the product comes in is great...ziplocked with keyring and stiker for cabinet!

xpd: If you read the site FAQ, they do mention that vibration will eventually wear the clip down... so earthquake, short one would probably be ok..... anyone want to test it ? ;)

Inventor of the Rackstuds™ here. We are in discussions with various overseas rack manufacturers to see if we can have the Rackstuds™ used in the next Seismic test as this is not something we can easily do ourselves. We've done extensive testing with both SGS labs and UL but no one in NZ does seismic rack testing (odd considering our past!)?

The problem is there is no actual compliance documentation for the incumbent mounting hardware (?) as I've tried to find this for cage nuts. It's just assumed they are seismic rated due to their [assumed] inclusion in the mounting of a dummy load for zone 4 rack testing.

The zone 4 testing for racks (at least in the US) uses a 453kg test load and the rack is subjected to a Richter 9 earthquake (1hz shaker table input) for 30s. In order for a rack to pass, the measured deflection in the x-axis at the top of the rack must not exceed 76mm. No reference is ever made to the mounting hardware. Based on the testing we've already done with UL in Christchurch, they suspect the Rackstuds™ could actually survive this test but of course, this is something we'd dearly like to prove.

I'd be happy to hear from the industry if anyone has a better understanding of the compliance requirements for existing mounting hardware or if anyone knows of a rack manufacturer who plans to have seismic testing undertaken in the next 3 months.

These are now the mounting method of choice for my work. Any new or replacement equipment will be installed using Rackstuds. Even passed the message onto my cable contractor!

I found one place where cage nuts beat out rack studs.. (pretty situational though... I'm a rack stud convert)

When replacing a cisco router it has U shaped "holes" at the top and the reverse at the bottom. So you can unscrew the top two screws, and loosen the bottom two to remove the router by lifting it vertically. Where as with the rack studs you have to slide it straight out over the pillars at the front. This assumes there is space around said router in the rack (which there was in this case). So it's an oddball case, and I flat out replaced the cage nuts anyways (seeing as we had the thing out). I don't see going back to cage nuts any time soon.
