Amosnz: My work has a Corporate TeamViewer license for version 8, however now that version 9 is released they want us to pay for the upgrade.
At these prices it should be a lifetime license, so if you are thinking about buying TV bear this in mind.


Our organization will be buying Teamviewer 9 licenses with 10 seats in couple of months. While the initial cost of the corporate/enterprise license that comes with 3 seats is cheap, the additional seats are not. Saying that it's a one off cost and only need to pay 30% of the advertised price for version 10 or version 11 etc updates. Any version 9 updates are free of cost. Still better than the VNC solution we use now.

Teamviewer is very good - I like the 'portable' nature of it - ie you dont have to install - just run the program at each end.

Makes it very good for helping a 'challenged' remote user - which I have to do from time to time.
But you cant run it for free for too long without getting nag screens.

Have tried ammyy admin - it works very similar to TV - maybe not quite as snappy - but has no osx version.

Wow 10 seats!  You must actually be Bill Gates.  :)
That's something else I don't like with their pricing, additional seats should get cheaper the more you purchase.

I've got a feeling that my work will ignore v9 and make us stay on v8 until some new feature makes them decide to purchase.  I've no idea if the upgrade cost from (eg) v8 to v10 will be the same as v8 to v9 is currently.

That's why we went with ScreenConnect, pricing is much easier on the wallet!

LogMeIn also have a service join.me which is good for one-off remote support. It's easier to get up and running than LMI or TV. When my parents got a new PC, I got them to start a join.me session, and used that to do the install of LMI Free.

Might be an option for anyone looking for an ad-hoc only alternative.

Man, this is the worst news!

I tried TeamViewer for a while, but I don't like the fact that you need an application at the 'support person' end -- I'd rather just log in through a website like LogMeIn.

LMI have said on their Facebook that if you have their Central product you can continue to have, and add more LMI free clients without paying extra.

I've quickly updated my oldest free account to LMI Central and moved over the clients I have in my other free accounts (I have several accounts as you could only have 10 or less per account before). It's US$299 year for up to 100 clients. A right pain, but the alternative hassles are even worse for me. End users will have to pay.

I used to use LogMeIn Free for accessing my work desktop from home, and it was very handy for doing that.  I only used it a couple of times over the last three years, it was just for emergencies, but it was nice to know that if I was on the other side of the world then I could still log into my work PC!

I guess you guys have been looking at the alternatives, so I thought I'd pick your brains to see if I can find a replacement.

My requirements:

Must work on Windows XP or above, I don't need Mac or phone access.
Must run as a service so I can get someone in the office to just turn my PC on and not have to log in or run any special software.
Since I use it so rarely it must be free.
Must offer screen mirroring so I can run programs remotely.
File transfer would be nice but isn't necessary.
Remote printing isn't needed.
Would be nice if it used my Windows login for authentication, i.e. don't need to set up a special username/password for remote access.
Would be nice if it was firewall friendly and didn't require me to open special ports.

So which of the alternatives do you think would work for me?

This is disappointing news.  I thought LogMeIn was a great product and even purchased a pro licence for one my machines so will need to explore what this means. Previously I had used TightVNC, but LMI a lot better. Like many here I also support older users so need to have something that works with any intervention and their part.  

One additional benefit I found with LMI was when my son's computer was stolen overseas, I could tell when it came back online - it never did, but that in itself tells me something.  While LMI always said they couldn't help when computers were stolen, but it was kinda nice to have at least some indication of what might have happened.  

Looks like a will explore the other options mentioned here.  Will try Chrome first....

The thing that has me a bit concerned about Team Viewer is that I read a lot of complaints about how it can be annoying with regard to it complaining about over-use or thinking you're using it commercially.

Tomorrow I'm going to try Chrome Remote Desktop to see how that works, I'll report back here my findings.

I use Team Viewer to log into my home machine probably 5-10 times during the working week and it's fine. There is a 'thank you for using Team Viewer' nag screen you get as you close the connection, but I don't even notice it.

Does the Chrome Remote Desktop require you to have Chrome running? I would be reluctant to use anything that doesn't run as an OS service

No you don't need to have Chrome running for it to work and it seems to be pretty responsive too.
You do need to have a Google account though.

I'm all for paying for something if the service is worthwhile and was considering upgrading to Logmein Central, but with this abrupt 7 days and gone, means I will be putting my money elsewhere.
