A few years ago...not that many we used to get spam emails and faxes from a natural supplement company. After a little bit of detective work "dumb enough to register her domain in her own name" I tracked her down to ... get this... next door to my best mate living in Outram.

Well we both implemented a rather severe case of signing her up to any spammy websites we could find and faxed her continuously for a number of days.

Since my mate was the local "computer dude" in the street she contracted him to stop the fax problems and to help her stop the spam she was getting.

So after he got her to change her email address and phone number he suggested she might not want out send faxes anymore...and billed her for 8 hours work cool then we converted the proceeds into beer

Ok I know, a little off the topic but it was a good news story

I hope this person is not planning into getting back into the spam business when there's better broadband in Outram.

It did go through my mind ...good reason to keep them on the 5Mbit they have now (it does make teamviewer a bit slow though)

These sort are a plague. For months Zoom Web Media have been phoning me. Now they have resorted to phoning once or twice every week day between 4-6pm. I keep advising my telco carrier (2talk) who say they keep blocking them, but they keep changing numbers.

I've come across a few NZ based spammers and almost every time they pull the 'ignorance' line on me. In a recent case I contacted the spammer's bulk mail company (SwipeHQ - who I also had dealings with for their other services) who advised me all their clients are advised what their obligations are and agree to this.

I no longer tolerate the ignorance excuse. If it's a NZ source I get straight on to their ISP and insist they deal with it.

If it's a New Zealand company (and I suspect this batch is not) you should be reporting to the DIA which has powers to actually write a fine and get these people to learn by costing them real money.

On this topic, SEO companies that tell customers that Google AdWords will help their SEO. It will not. Google does not improve any website rankings based on payments. Google AdWords is advertising and costs money. SEO is free in the sense that your site will be listed if it's not banned. If you do things right, it will work.

One thing that Adwords is great for is keyword research. I have learned a lot about which keywords convert and work via Google Adwords.

Given enough volume, you can figure out good keywords really fast via Adwords, while you would have to do changes and then wait quite a long time if you were only basing it on what you see on organic search results.

But as Mauricio points out, Google Adwords is not going to do anything for your organic search placements.

Ha! I does amuse me when I read comments like this. Shows a lack of understanding or appreciation of the SEO/SEM craft. Imagine if you said the same about your builder or mechanic?

If you believe everything Google says on SEO, then yes, this is true.
And I'd agree that generally speaking it appears there is no significant connection. And they'd be wrong to make that as a claim.

However.... technically, strictly speaking.... perhaps not, there is a little voice in my mind that just maybe this statement isn't always true....  as you can see for instance with Google vs eBay. And Google hasn't always been completely straight with the truth.

Anyway, that is largely a minor side point and not so relevant to the typical SME.  It is however quite common for SEO companies to also offer SEM services too, as while these are different areas they do have a significant skill set overlap. Quite possibly while switching between offering one service and another it could be accidentally misconstrued by the person they're pitching to that there is a connection between the two? After all, it isn't at all common for the average person to realise exactly what is the difference between SEO and SEM, and their results.

Dman, I read a proposal and saw a report. Some companies make money of ongoing SEM and have an interest in making the distinction unclear.

Yes, I have received several with like wording, but each time rom a different, small NZ town.  The laugh of it is that, for the email address they have been spamming, there is, and never has been any associated web site.  As tho more proof were needed that this spam is pure lies.  Today's follow up email from "Jennifer" :

"I sent you a note last week regarding issues with your business website and never heard back from you.  Was looking at your site again today and noticed things were the same; before I closed the task I wanted to reach out one more time.  Would you like some help with this? "We are the Leading Internet marketing Company in New Zealand!" Can I call you this week to discuss some proven strategies that could help your business Grow? Looking forward to your positive response."

Unfortunately in the SEO business (as in many other businesses, for sure) there are many cowboys. So I don't doubt for a second that someone has told a customer that using money on Adwords would boost their organic rankings in Google.

The same jokers typically sell Facebook pages/apps for $10,000 NZD per page. And sell monthly "Adwords-subscriptions" where most of the money seem to be right in the pocket of the "agency".

Its really easy to get screwed over if you don't watch out.

SWMBO just received another of these SEO spams from info@mediapro.biz.  "Sam" insists he works for a fast growing online marketing agency "here in AU/NZ".

SpamCop traces the message back to Pioneer E-labs (an Indian firm) and to ctrls.in ("Ctrl S Datacentre"), also in India.

Perhaps "Sam" would like to explain the advantages of using Indian servers to optimise one's Web site for search engines like "AU Google.com".
