"Woman knew blackmail email was a scam 'because I'm religious and don't watch porn'"

Last line "Anybody who received the scam should phone police."

Really?  Lets waste police time with hundreds/thousands of calls about spam??? gez...

Police media release on the email scam actually states:

Anyone who believes they are a victim of a crime, in person or online, should report the matter to their local Police.

That's a bit different from Stuff making out anyone receiving the email should contact the Police!

Maxcat:

Go here: https://haveibeenpwned.com/

Hmmm... It says that my email was "found on one site". I then tried 2 more gmail accounts I have, and it says they're pwned too.

Browsing through their list of sources, I see a few places I've created accounts at. But I *never* use my email account's password to create accounts elsewhere, so my email account is safe. OTOH, I do use the same password for throwaway accounts, so potentially those might be compromised. Accounts I want to keep get their passwords changed.

I don't like the idea of using a password manager, especially one that syncs passwords across devices. You have no idea whether your passwords are uploaded and stored somewhere. And, in tin-foil hat mode, a password manager would be an excellent way to collect usernames and passwords.

I've been bombarded with these spam emails for about a month now.

They started with $8000 ransom, now down to $300! pretty good discount, not sure if respond now or wait another week or 2. haha

I've also sent scammers pictures of phallus's from around the internet and they seem to stop..
Also letting them know that you want to be famous and to expose everything seems to work well.

I use a random string generator script. New site = new password.

I would strongly suggest you ignore the scam but it appears you have already concluded this as well.

Been getting a few new versiosn so of these over the last few days. Seems they are using login details from social media websites that must have had their systems hacked, as they are quite difficult passwords.

I have my email system set up to catch everything that comes into my domain.

I create a new email address for everything I log into, with a new random password for that account.

I have several hundred email/password combinations, all managed by an offline password manager that's on my phone.

Yes it's a pain to use, but I have very high confidence in the system.

It's great when I get emails sent to an email address for a forum that I haven't used in a decade, straight to spam.

My important accounts all have dual factor enabled.

I feel left out, I haven't seen one of these emails yet, but I know exactly what to do now, send them photo's of small mushrooms (Trump reference there).

No no, They just check email addresses against their databases of emails from leaks. You are only giving out your email which in some cases they already have.
I was part of the 000webhost breach on my main email and on throwaways from back in the good ol days

Just received one of these ransom emails wanting bitcoin hush money using a very old email and password combo....

Has used a spoof of my own emails address as the sender.

If I do a whois 14.248.123.44, which is the From IP in the message header, I get what appears to be heaps of info about the sender and location.

Is it worth doing anything with the whois info or just report the email to an abuse address?

Probably not. The machine is liekly insecure and used as a relay rather than the source of the email.

Pretty similar to the original posters email.

It's obviously fake. The email address he sent this black mail attempt to is a special throw away one, that I give to dodgy websites. The password they gave was also throw away one.

I haven't paid for porn in over 10 years. Even then it was pretty vanilla porn. They obviously either stolen or been sold an ancient database of username passwords.

I've never used monitors with built-in cameras, or even microphones. The only time I've used cameras is when I professional teleconference. Because the professional camera and lights are bulky, I always disconnect everything.

I'm also a IT professional, with decades of experience, so I wouldn't let someone install a keylogger. The first thing I do when I build a PC is disable all remote help features.

Lastly I've never used Messenger. I've always mistrusted all social media, so nothing there either.

A lot of d*ckh**ds out there.

I do know password is your pass words. Lets get directly to purpose. Not one person has compensated me to check about you. You may not know me and you are probably wondering why you are getting this e mail?

Let me tell you, i setup a malware on the X videos (porn material) site and there's more, you visited this website to have fun (you know what i mean). When you were viewing videos, your browser initiated functioning as a RDP that has a keylogger which gave me access to your display screen and also cam. after that, my software program gathered your entire contacts from your Messenger, social networks, and email . Next i made a video. First part shows the video you were viewing (you've got a nice taste rofl), and second part shows the recording of your cam, and it is you.

You actually have two solutions. We should look at the solutions in details:

1st alternative is to ignore this email message. in this case, i am going to send your actual videotape to every bit of your personal contacts and thus visualize regarding the awkwardness you experience. or should you be in an intimate relationship, precisely how it will affect?

other option will be to compensate me USD 986. We will regard it as a donation. Then, i will without delay delete your videotape. You can keep everyday life like this never happened and you will not hear back again from me.

You will make the payment by Bitcoin (if you do not know this, search 'how to buy bitcoin' in Google).

BTC address: bitcion address

if you may be looking at going to the law enforcement officials, surely, this mail cannot be traced back to me. I have taken care of my moves. i am not trying to ask you for money a huge amount, i only want to be rewarded. specific%} pixel in thi5WY if i don't receive the bitcoin, i will send your video to all of your contacts including family members, co-workers, and so on. Nonetheless, if i receive the payment, i will destroy the video right away. If you really want proof, reply with Yeah and i definitely will send out your video recording to your 7 friends. it's a non:negotiable offer therefore don't waste mine time & yours by responding to this e-mail.
