If you host at home on a spare PC, if that PC is compromised your whole network could be compromised. If your main PC isn't hardened it might be wiped, get viruses, etc, as home PCs are often not well protected.
Ok Lets try and get this sorted ... How about I arrange 3 months of free hosting for SMF or similar. Ill get it installed and setup with all the default themes etc ?
I guess what you really need todo is confirm if the community your part of wants to move away from FB ??
to answer your question, yes its easy and possible to host this yourself from a spare pc at home but you are opening yourself up to a can of worms, there's more overhead then you may think in maintaining it, particularly around security.. there a websites on the online that are constantly scanning the net for computers that have exposed themselves to the internet, if you were unlucky enough to be a target as a result of one of these scan you'll open yourself up to a world of headache.. last thing you would want is to expose all your members details.. and have your home network hi-jacked
it may sound to you like you're getting a lot of pessimistic answers here but it's all been really good advice, take it for what its worth..
If you choose to ignore the advice and want to push forward with hosting it yourself you'll at a minimum seriously want to consider buying(will be a lot more than purchasing hosting) or setting up an open source firewall (free but will cost you a lot in time setting up and learning what you need to do to set it up right)

wow what an offer, nice one @sampler
It may also be against your ISP's terms to run a server on your home connection.
@timmmay yes i see the problem....thanks
@sampler thats very kind of you....i dont expect the FB group to jump across but it would be somewhere where
images/documents etc could be stored and more important searched for later on,
Would you look at this as a test case to see if it works? give me a idea on ongoing hosting costs
after the 3 months as if i cant get support if maybe fruitless
my domain is with crazydomains
@dt no i agree with you all but I needed to exhaust all my questions....

Why don't you just host it on some cheap shared hosting?

LOL haven't seen that term be used EVER. ;)
(serial server at home user over multiple ISPs)
It used to be quite common several years (and more) ago. Especially when unlimited data first came out and the ISPs were worried about people using massive amounts of data (1990's?).
There also used to be (not sure if it's still a thing) rules about using a residential connection for business purposes. In theory you weren't allowed to use a residential connection if you were running a small business from home (although this usually wasn't enforced).
