People may also buy them as they beleive with may help with SEO. Soif they don't have the .co.nz, they maybe able to get the .kiwi.nz.

Would having a .kiwi.nz domain name actually make a difference to your SEO ranking?

What would you have to do for that?  I'm guessing that a redirect to your normal web site won't do squat will it?

www.MyCo.kiwi.nz --> www.MyCompanyNormalSite.co.nz

Or would people need to put a whole new web site or a full copy of their .co.nz site on the .kiwi.nz domain?

Personally I'm quite happy with my dot com, don't see any need to get a .co.nz let alone typing more characters to get .kiwi.nz

Ragnor: Just saw this in my rss reader

All the ones I wanted I think were purchased by squatters from overseas, and they must have used some automated system as they were registered very close to 10.00am. I think they should have restricted these to NZers who can prove they are NZers, like .au domains are. The squatters just ruin it for everyone who wanted a legitimate .nz domain.

The DNC did a consultation.  I went to on the other day for 2ld registrations.  You should put in a submission.

This really does serve as a good lesson for what will come with 2lds.

http://dnc.org.nz/second_level_proposal_c1

Submissions can also be made by email to policies@dnc.org.nz, by fax to (04) 495 2115, or by mail to P O Box 11881, Wellington.  The closing date for submissions is midday on Thursday 27 September 2012.

Aren't there discussions to go down to the lowest level domain? Eg. something.nz
so kiwi.nz will be one of many new domains ?

Yes, read Don's post.  Personally I actually oppose opening things up to that level - all it achieves is a goldmine for squatters.  After all, look at how many squatters there are in .kiwi.nz - global brands including Coca-Cola, Microsoft, Google, Facebook, and even the New Zealand Parliament!  Out of all the global car manufacturers, only Toyota managed to get their brand before the pond scum did.

Personally, I'm more concerned how many of those squatted domains in that blog post are bank domains - ASB, National Bank, Westpac, Kiwibank (nice redundancy).  It's actually slightly worrying that DNC didn't have the foresight to firewall off known bank domains to prevent them from being acquired - it's all well and good that squatters can get them, but what if a phisher got them?  Imagine the damage that can be done with an email saying "Your account needs an update.  Visit www.asb.kiwi.nz to prevent disruption to your accounts".

I say let em have them. A domain name is not sufficient security for a bank login, its time banks evolved their security.

Really the only people to win are the registrars since it will make people register more domain names for their business to protect it against others getting them.

Indeed.

Also, I notice InternetNZ failed to register their .kiwi.nz.  Anyone wanna get that to prove a point?

(Note: I don't actually encourage doing this, but I can imagine Ragnor might to support his anti-TLD proliferation stance!)

1. I suspect that many of the kiwi.nz domains will expire after 1 month. Many would have been registered just to support Don.

2. DNSSEC is on the way to provide a better level of authentication.

3. People should have put in submissions on the 2ld domain thing if they were interested.

http://dnc.org.nz/second_level_proposal_c1

There was a massive number of submission already made before I went to the public consultation here in Christchurch.

It was the first time I'd meet the DNC folk. I have to say I left quite confident that these people have more than enough clue to get a very good balance between what people want, what needs to be done and what's good for our community.

A 301 Permanent Redirection to your normal domain would be desirable. A completely new web site would be considered duplicated content and that's a big NO for SEO. Even www and non-www is duplicate as they are both different domains.

Registrations are for at least one year, aren't they?

Domains are billed and renewed at the SRS on a monthly basis.  Some providers may only allow annual registration, but that's not a limitation of the registry.
