I seem to get these every day or so. I wonder what the response rate on this sort of spam is. Wouldn't think it would be overly high.

I think most spammers consider a 1 in 500,000 response rate to be good.

So I'm considering using a SEO company to improve my website's ranking but am extremely put-off by the potential problems from cowboy organisations. I too have been spammed and cold-called for the last 6 years by SEO 'experts'.

The thing is I have done a bit of research into SEO and have tried to apply as much as possible to my website but still struggle to get higher up on the rankings. To be honest I don't really understand it so I'm just copying what the blogs and articles suggest be done.

Adwords is not only expensive, but Google seems to just throw in random search terms that aren't really useful to my business, which leads to me paying for clicks that aren't really potential customers. I use it anyway because I need to be on the first page somehow. I thought maybe it would be cheaper to pay somebody to optimize the website instead.

Any decent advice appreciated :)

I don't know much about anything but I'll give it a go.

It's desirable to raise your position in the search rankings, but SEO scammers are only out to fleece you.

Timbo, I might be able to help you. - but might be out of your price range

If I am not too expensive for you, I could help you both with the Adwords part and SEO. For Adwords, as you have discovered, it is really easy to set up a campaign and start giving Google your money without much return. What you are seeing is probably too broad keywords - but there are ways to remedy that. I have found Adwords to be a really good way to do keyword research. Its a quick way to find out which keywords will actually convert for you.

For the SEO part: There are three really important parts of SEO:

1) Writing content that matches up with what people search for when they are looking for your business.
2) Making sure that the content is technically represented in such a way that Google can easily understand what is the important keyword for the page in question.
3) Incoming links.

Building links is not an easy feat. And there is many ways to do it wrong - and the cowboys will typically give you lots of links, but not necessarily links that will be beneficials or will last. Google has a war going with bad SEO and people that try to trick them, so when they find these kinds of link networks they usually hammer them to the bottom of the search results. Links from networks that Google find to be trying to spam their search results will be bad for your search engine ratings.
