Tinshed: Hmmm, with Chrome Remote Desktop it seems that each time you want to share your screen, you need to give the access code to the person who wishes to access your computer. This won't work for the "elder support" I am sometimes required to give. Quite often I get the "Mum's computer not working, can you fix it? She has left it running." question and the beauty of LMI was that I could do that without any intervention on her part. Might try Teamviewer. Or have I misunderstood something?

The code is needed for one-off access. You can just configure the PC to always allow remote control, and that will be permanently linked to your account.

Well I've installed Chrome Remote Desktop and managed to getting it working.

One problem I had was when setting up the host PC it asked me for a pin (at least 6 digits long) and I entered a 20 digit number. After accepting the pin I then got an error saying it couldn't start the service. Lowering the pin to 12 digits worked, so it looks like there's an upper limit to the length of the pin but they're not checking for it when you set it up.

One problem I've found is that when switched to full screen mode certain system keys aren't sent through to the host PC. For example alt-tab to switch between programs brings up the local programs not the remote ones. Same with the Windows key to bring up the start menu (I'm on Windows XP). I know there's a Send Keys menu but that only included Prtscrn and Alt+Ctrl+Del.

Does Team Viewer allow sending of system keys?

I use Ammyy. It was cheap enough, does everything I want it to. I only use teamviewer when connecting to Macs now. Not going to bother with my logmein accounts, pretty much scrapped it after the last time when they gave everyone no notice and reduced the amount of free ones.

What happens if you are away from your PC and need to use Google Remote Desktop? You can ask someone to use their browser, but what happens if you login to their Chrome browser? Will it merge their apps and bookmarks into your account?

Easy. You can have multiple "users" (profile" in your Google Chrome browser).

That's almost certainly because you've bought LogMeIn Ignition for a hand-held device at some stage in the past. That way it doesn't look like you've wasted your money on a worthless app if they pull the plug in 7 days and your app would then stop working. In 6 months, you'll need to decide whether you want to buy Pro, Central or drop out.

Ah yes that's it. Will use it then move to Teamviewer later. Their dashboard is 'handy' with pro.. But you could see that if you Remoted in anyway... :)

Any thoughts on Hamaichi? Since this appears to be linked to logmein accounts I wonder if this will also vanish from the 'free' label.

Its very rarely that I actually choose to delete an account, but I'll be deleting my LogMeIn account when I've completed my move to TeamViewer. That means LogMeIn will have no presence with me (except for their ads in this thread ;) ).

I read somewhere (slashdot I think) that free accounts are really important to tech companies, even if the individual never purchases a paid system. That is, just showing that people have a need for the product you provide. I certainly would never have heard of the company if they hadn't had the free service...

2014 will become the year in which the internet is monetized.

It's interesting that I used to get an incredible number of LogMeIn ads at Youtube. Over the last week, they've been replaced with Teamviewer ads. They're really getting in there and mopping up this mess.

I hope my LMI Central subscription doesn't end up wasted, if LMI go under.

Like many, one week just wasn't long enough to move all my free hosts over to another solution. At least I have a year to change tack if necessary.

I thought the same thing, but when I went to delete my LogMeIn account I couldn't find a way to do it! A quick Google and I found people talking on their forum about it, apparently you have to email them and ask them nicely to remove your account.

You can't remove subscriptions by yourself either (you can easily create them!) and have to email support to do it for you.

So...

At the end of all this, is there 1 software solution which isn't excessively expensive but works as well as LogMeIn?

TeamViewer seems expensive and for the fact that you can only have 1 remote control session at a time (On the cheapest license).. that's pretty suck.

I do Software/Security updates late at night when the customers are already home, and can do upwards of 10 computers at a time since Windows Updates always take forever!

I use LogMeIn central and reckon its pretty cheap for what I can do with it. Control about 70 computers remotely.

However we do have a Gateway on some sites so I use the new Microsoft RDP app on the iPad now for quite a few as its much nicer. However if you are training someone remotely or helping them out LogMeIn is way better as they can see what is going on.

I'm keen to use Team Viewer and probably will in respect of remoting into my in-laws computers but from what I've read you need to install an application on the computer you log in from and that is goin,g to cause me issues if I try and log into my home PC from work.

I can't install anything on my work PC, which is why Logmein was so useful as it was internet based - am I wrong about Team Viewer or if I am correct what other free options allow remote access simply through a web browser (and in my case that has to be IE)?
