Yep, the upper band on mine is terrible - it fluctuates between 2 and 4 bits on those frequencies.

Unfortunately, as I mentioned - my copper comes in at the highest point of the house (above ground) and I don't have a way to get in to the ceiling at present (no ladder and the manhole is up high inside a skylight well).

I think when I can afford it, I'll get someone in to disconnect the Sky jack and probably just run new cable to the Fritzbox jack.

Sounds like a good plan. Disconnecting the other jacks is a good first step tho.

Very good idea. On naked VDSL best idea IMO is to run a new cable from the ETP\demarc to modem and disconnect absolutely everything else, this is pretty much what I've done and it's been working great given I'm a decent distance from my local cabinet. A master filter is also fine, I had one originally and it means you can leave unused jackpoints, etc connected and return to having a POTS line if you ever want to; but VOIP is good enough these days I don't know why you'd want to!)

I am having a new cable installed tomorrow morning, bypassing all existing internal wiring, direct to the router.

I will report some updated DSL info after I have the new connection.

I can vouch for the fact that getting a new cable from the demarc to the router, makes a difference. Naked VDSL.

Here are my modem stats on a 6 jack connected, internal star system.

Here are my stats this morning, after connecting to the new single jack point, connected to the new demarc cable.

@gavinbennett: Nice one; That is a massive improvement! And thanks for letting us know; Always good to see real figures on just how much affect house wiring/unterminated stubs can have.

I suspect you should see some improvements from DLM soon now :)

I am hoping for some improvements too.

Do you know why I would be getting a pretty good speed test readout, even though my sync rate is much lower?

Wow, quite an improvement - I really need to get on and organise my wiring.

A stupid question, but if you weren't doing it yourself, who do you get in? A local sparky? Just asking as, where I am - the nearest company that deals with communications stuff is about half an hour away - would face travel charges etc.

Or, do you get Chorus in to do it and face their fees?

Hey andrewb

I called the first sparky yesterday that could come over this morning and lay another Cat5e cable.

When he got here this morning, we opened the demarc, and my internal patch panel system, and we decided that rather then lay a full length of new cable, all we did was use another twisted pair from the demarc, to the panel that connects to the jack that I have the modem connected to. i.e. all of the internal phone jacks were connected using the blue pair. I added a second BT phone sockets to the point I wanted my modem connected to, using the brown pair, from the same cable that was in the wall already.

So, if/when I leave this house, I can reconnect the original pair in the demarc, and then all jack points will be connected as they were yeasterday, and all 6 original jacks can be connected to POTS, should someone want to do that.

Wow, that's like night and day!!

It might be worth getting Snap to reset your DLM profile (again) so that you have the best chance of getting DLM to give you the best connection possible.

I'm not sure why speedtest is saying you're getting faster than your line is connected at, except to say that speedtest isn't always 100%. Try a best of 3?

Do you mind if I use your before and after images in the thread's first post & summary?

So It's been a while but heres my update. Over Xmas some how from my resetting of the device which I did no more than once a day I ended up on DLM6. So I thought I need to just leave it alone. I forgot about it and about a week ago I noticed DLM changes were coming thick and fast. Every 1-2 days my router was resetting at the normal 3-4am times.

Yesterday I was put on DLM1 but my error rate was high. Up to 20CRCpm with a low of 9. I didn't want to take the risk of losing DLM1 again so I set the SNR up to 13 and now I have a nice sync and a far better CRCpm. Not sure if it will hold but we will see.

I still have not got round to running a cat5e cable from the demarc yet but I'm keen to get that done soon to see if it makes any improvement.

Good plan, that should keep you on DLM1 for now. From what we know a CRCPM of < 2 is under the DLM1 threshold.

Yeah I really didn't want to touch anything this time around but I know those CRCpm were too high even with bitswap on. At least now I'm on 2CRCpm and if bitswap was on that would drop to below or close to 1.

It's nice having 20ms pings to Christchurch again. On DLM6 it was up to 55ms!
