I have noticed in the last few days that (at least according to speedtest.net), my national termination point seems to have been moving down the country! When I was first connected to snap a little over a week ago, my connection point was in Auckland (where I am physically located). Yesterday it was Wellington and today it's in Christchurch. It's not just speedtest.net where I'm seeing this change, my latency to national and international servers has also increased by ~30ms since the move to Christchurch.

Can anyone enlighten me as to what might be going on here?

Yeah. It's changed quite a bit in the last 24hrs as well (probably 4-5 times).

As I mentioned tho, it's not just speedtest, my latency has increased by 30ms or so...

well you might have picked up a ip range from another location ( like you have ) restart your router and you'll find it'll be back to auckland

Oic, hmm, I would have thought that Auckland users would be configured to automatically connect to an Auckland gateway, otherwise this is likely to happen again frequently in future I would imagine...

you connect to what ever gateway has the lesser users. and it does happen regually

I've noticed this also, doing speedtests on VF's 3G network. Always used to route thru Auckland more recently have seen it drift south.
But Latency has improved as it's got closer.

I think you'll actually find it's done per island not load...

and i live in the south island and i have had many wellington/auckland dynamic ranges.

If you're talking about IPs they will be allocated dynamically at random.

If you're talking about DSL handovers they are mapped per island.

Well, I reconnected a couple of times and now while speedtest shows me in Auckland, my latency is still high...

I have noticed the same thing, and actually this is quite easy to see if you have the fritzbox for instance.
In the web interface go to "System" to see the log file (optionally click on the "internet connection" tab) and you should be able to read something like this:

Internet connection established successfully. IP address: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, DNS server: 202.37.101.1 and 202.37.101.2, Gateway: 111.69.17.20, Broadband PoP: SNAPDSL-CHC

I'm in Hamilton and right now the broadband PoP is SNAPDSL-CHC where it used to always stay on SNAPDSL-AKL.

On the 07th of July Snap used to have a problem of high latency on their network (that was resolved at 12.50pm on the same day). Maybe this is related and they have temporarily disabled their Auckland gateway for maintenance? This is just an hypothesis, could someone confirm?

Yeah, you could be right, this maybe temporary...

Ok, rang Snap and they said that there is an upgrade going on at the moment in Auckland, so all Auckland traffic is being routed via Chch for the duration of the change. Apparently the outage is scheduled for 24hrs from midnight last night.
