Once again, I'm getting no help going through the usual helpdesk channels with Snap. So to geekzone I come. I am really questioning whether Snap VoIP is anywhere close to a replacement for a POTS.

I can deal with the DTMF issues, but I would really hope that they are fixed soon. But the latest odd bug is that my telephony devices connected to the Fritzbox will randomly ring, with no-one actually calling me. My Fritzbox logs will show:

So far I have called the Snap Helpdesk, and all they have told me is that my Fritzbox is configured correctly, and someone must be pranking me. I don't believe this for one second, as I never had this issue until I switched from POTS to VoIP.

Secondly, my telephone number will deregister with no warning whatsoever, and will not automatically reconnect to Snap's VoIP servers without me having to manually restart my modem. I found this out today when someone was trying to get hold of me. This is unacceptable.

To me it seems that either the Fritzbox is a flop or Snap's VoIP service is not up to par.

Was this Fritzbox configured by yourself or Snap?

I'm using 2talk on the fritz and the only problem that we have is the odd strange noise in the ear piece every so often (not enough to worry me)

It does sound like a problem with the voip service from snap rather than the box

It depends. If it is configured by the user, it could be some security setting left open allowing SIP probes. If configured by Snap then it's something else.

I'm wondering about the port forwarding setup too, sounds suspicious.

Yep agree my fritz came pre-confiigured by snap so thinking that the OP would be the same.

The wizard to setup a phone line on the fritz is really id10t proof - just put in the basic sip settings and the box does the rest.

Configured by Snap, and helpdesk have logged in to check my settings over the phone. When I run a port scan from my mobile phone to my home IP I do see that 5060 is open. Not sure if that is suppose to be the case for it to work.

Leaving port 5060 open is not good, and should not be necessary.

I have three SIP lines at home and don't have any port open for those. It shouldn't be needed in modern setups.

Well, there is no option AFAIK to close that port.

I had a similar problem with my VoIP setup with 2talk, but was not using a fritz box but Linksys spa2102, After a few days I realized that the AC/DC transformer was radiating some EMF signal and was interfering with the spa2102 and causing a weird buzzing sound in the handset.

I just simply moved the transformer and ATA away from each other by about 200-300mm and the problem was solved. May be this could work for you.

That port just seems to be open on the Fritzbox and there doesn't seem to be any way to close it.  Mine is open too.  Apparently has "inbuilt protection from SIP attack" according to this vendor:

@OP:  2talk + Fritzbox here and it generally works fine so I don't think it's a fritzbox issue, unless yours is faulty.

I would highly suspect the issue is just inbound SIP bots hitting the box. It's pretty common these days to see lots of these bots attempting to find insecure PBX's. I've spent a lot of time playing with the Fritz!box and have a few models here but I'm not a fan of their SIP stack, but do love the functionality it offers. Because I've never deployed any in a production environment it's not something I've tested.

Many SIP stacks incl those from Cisco have the ability to only allow SIP traffic from the defined SIP proxy, and this should be enabled by default to avoid issues such as this which can cause your phone to ring randomly as the bot keeps sending SIP headers. Just be aware that some providers such as 2talk won't work with this.

You should also never have port 5060 forwarded for any VoIP equipment unless you fully understand the risks of doing so.

I get weird noises on the calls on my fritz as well, using it with 2talk. Never had any phantom calls however.

Leaving port 5060 open to the world is asking for trouble locking it to the provider primary and secondary proxies is the only real way to deploy, I agree with SBiddle on the SIP stack as it has quite a few issues that we found so one off the main reasons we never looked to hard at this box a few years ago when we tested it, pretty good router but much better SIP stacks around and when providing Voice services pretty critical.

Forgot to add , it will be incredibly easy to tell if this is the issue or not, SNAP will have the call records for those Call timings if the calls originated from their network , if they don't then the calls are being generated from the Internet to your device directly because they have found your open device on port 5060 as its wide open to the whole world, be prepared for this to be an ongoing issue if this is the case.
