Snap Offers New Zealand’s Fastest Home Broadband
Trial of 200Mbps service includes a “no data cap” option

11 December 2013 – Consumers keen to try New Zealand’s fastest home broadband can access Snap’s new 200Mbps Lightwave Extreme service from today.

Lightwave Extreme offers download speeds of up to 200Mbps over the Chorus Ultra-Fast Broadband network – significantly faster than any existing 100Mbps UFB fibre services and even the best cable services which offer up to 130Mbps. Lightwave Extreme comes with 500GB of data and an unlimited data package, Lightwave Extreme Unlimited, is also available.

Snap is the first ISP to resell Chorus’ 200Mbs service, which is currently offered on a trial basis and limited to the first 1,000 subscribers. Both existing and new Snap customers can sign up.

“There is today, nothing faster for New Zealand households and we expect heavy internet users will want to see for themselves what difference 200Mbps makes to their online experience. It effectively doubles download speeds,” said Snap chief executive Mark Petrie.

“Our first Lightwave Ultra users have been blown away by the speed and performance. Snap and Chorus look forward to learning what consumers are doing as we push the envelope in terms of speeds, pricing and data. While Lightwave Ultra is designed for retail customers, we will introduce a product for enterprise customers shortly.”

The service boasts download speeds of up to 200Mbps with upload speed of up to 50Mbps, and is available in two packages. Lightwave Extreme provides 500GB of data for $159 per month, while Lightwave Extreme Unlimited, priced at $199 per month, offers unlimited data with no restrictions or bandwidth management.

Chorus general manager, marketing and sales Victoria Crone says: “It’s great to see Snap taking the lead with Lightwave Extreme. Fibre will redefine New Zealand’s broadband experience and Snap is doing a great job of leading the way in giving their customers some of the very best broadband in the entire world.”

Lightwave Extreme is only available in areas covered by the Chorus network, and where Snap is currently providing UFB services. Although the service is currently a trial and some conditions may change, Snap will transition any customers to similar or better future services. Trial terms and conditions can be viewed at http://www.snap.net.nz/support/.

Giving everybody 1Gbps over GPON is the dumbest idea of all time. When 10GPON hits the market it'll be an OK option, but right now it'd just putting the wheels in motion to recreate the Conklin problem all over again.

Interesting with the 50 Mb upload, another provider I saw PR for last night was only offering 20Mb up with the 200Mb plan

A friend got a 200 or a 300 connection in Singapore some months ago ... 1,000 is established, non trial, I guess trial to them means 2000.  I think 150 is the budget fiber speed on offer.

50mb up seems a bit low? Didn't the Chorus 200mb plan have 100mb upload?

Hi Lorenceo

Chorus put a bunch of new speeds on the table a while ago, including 200/100, but since the whole copper pricing debacle hit they have now "delayed" launching these new products.

The 200/50 was proposed quite a while ago so it appears they have decided to continue offering this service, albeit on a trial basis.

A bit confusing I know but hopefully this helps. We're definitely not slowing the service down!

Cheers
Ralph

it makes me sad that any kind of fast internet is years away for my house. I think I have more hope of getting 4g with a larger data plan for home use first

Sounds great, and I'd love to apply, however the link seems to be broken - it points to a non existent scholarship application form?

Can we apply by calling the help desk?

The link is working just fine. The page also links to the trial T&Cs.

The link in the OP is fine. It's Snap's link under "How to Apply" that's broken.

Hi Maslink

Looks like we need to tidy up some of the old links on the website - apologies.

At this stage the only way to apply is via the helpdesk on 0800 BROADBAND, but the guys are under a bit of pressure tonight with this offer ;) So I'd be happy to get one of the team to give you a call tomorrow. Just DM me your contact/account details and a suitable time to call, and I'll arrange it.

Cheers
Ralph
