File-sharing site The Pirate Bay must be blocked by UK internet service providers, the High Court has ruled.

The Swedish website hosts links to download mostly-pirated free music and video.

Sky, Everything Everywhere, TalkTalk, O2 and Virgin Media must all prevent their users from accessing the site.

And so the censorship of the internet begins. Im quite suprised that we weren't the first country to do this but don't fear its only a matter of time before we follow suit!

sorry, but its been shown you cant block websites and in this case it is not even hard to get around it , you just have to switch to an open DNS to access it, when will the companies realize that blocking website is not the answer.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

I don't think the point is how easy it is to get around. The fact they are allowing individual websites to be blocked is the worrying fact.

You can download all TPB magnet links if you want to as it's less than 100MB.
One site goes another 6 start up.

You can also find all these magnets links with a google search so no need to even visit TPB website.

In a way I agree with this shutdown.

Lets get real, the pirate bay is 99% about piracy, there is very little legitimate material there.

eg, click the top 100 musics torrents, and it is all illegal.

Sure, you can try and justify piracy in so many ways, but it is still taking material without paying for it.

I think what people are most interested in is not so much that TPB is being blocked - because you're right, it's purpose is right there in the name - it's more that it is the thin end of the wedge. First they came for [whoevers] and I did nothing, because I was not a [whoever], and all that.

Yeah it starts with TPB but were does it end?

Youtube for the first 3-4 years of it's life was mainly pirated material?
How about Google/Bing seen as they list any file on any file sharing site?

You can 'justify' blocking TPB any way you like but with the same logic I can also 'justify' blocking 100's of legitimate sites people use everyday.

Hollywood started basically from illegal beginnings.

"Little over a century ago Edison stood at the cradle of the filmmaking industry. He was the first to invent a device through which people could project film and obtained many movie related patents. To make money from his hard work he asked a licensing fee from those who were making movies with his technology.

This licensing requirement motivated a group of rogue filmmaking pirates to flee New York, including a man named William. They left for the then still wild West, where they recorded many films without a license until Edison?s patents expired. These pirates continue to do business there today in a place they named Hollywood. William?s last name? Fox.

So Edison got no money from these Hollywood pirates. While today?s Hollywood would be up in arms about this gross circumvention of intellectual property rights, we should mention that Edison himself wasn?t squeaky clean either.

In fact, in 1902 Thomas Edison himself copied ?A Trip to the Moon,? a movie from Georges M?li?s, without permission to show it in US theaters. This overt act of piracy eventually resulted in the bankruptcy of the French filmmaker.

The above shows that it?s not a stretch to argue that the movie industry was built by pirates. Or to put it in other words, if early 1900 filmmakers would have paid for their licenses, Hollywood would probably have never been built."

Ohh the irony =/

The justifiers appear :)

Your examples are not affected because their primary purpose is not for pirating, or , they are an extra logical step away from the actual infringer.

The primary purpose of Youtube is not to download copyrighted material. Even better, youtube allow copyright holders to take-down material.

The primary purpose of google is as a search engine, not to download illegal material .

The primary purpose of piratebay (and many other torrent websites)  is to provide downloads of pirated material.

no the main reason they dont go after Google is that Google is more powerful and has more money than most of the studios and record companies

Youtubes primary purpose is video sharing. In the early years of Youtube more than 50% of content was copyrighted material.

The primary purpose of TPB is a torrent database, just because the majority of torrents are illegal has nothing to do with it.

Similar to dropbox, it is for file storage. If I upload only illegal material doesn't mean a whole country should block it.
