Just got this..

Greetings from Amazon Web Services,

Effective 1 October 2016, amendments to the New Zealand Goods and Services Tax (“GST”) legislation will require Amazon Web Services, Inc. (“AWS”) to charge GST at 15% to New Zealand based non-GST registered customers.

Please read carefully below if you are a New Zealand business registered for GST:

  • Before 31 October 2016 – Please enter your GST registration number on our tax settings page (https://console.aws.amazon.com/billing/home#/tax) for each of your AWS accounts. This will avoid GST being charged on your bill from October 2016.
  • If you are not able to submit your GST registration number by 31 October 2016, please do so at your earliest convenience.

Thank you for using Amazon Web Services.

Sincerely,

Amazon Web Services, Inc.

Sounds to me like they have it a bit wrong. If you enter your GST number you will still be charged GST, you can just claim it back, unless they've done something special with this process of overseas companies and GST.

Also, trying to sign into my root account today, it's asking me to choose between a business and personal account, the button at the bottom says "create account". I don't want to click that in case it resets my account or something. I'll have to log into a non-root account and contact support.

Very odd - let us know how it goes.

I'm sure this will immediately make us all buy from local shops instead....not.

Microsoft started this with Skype - already discussed here (non-specific to AWS).

I don't think this is for the Amazon website that we all buy stuff from is it? It's from AWS - Cloud hosting and such (https://aws.amazon.com/)

Yes that's correct, it's Amazon Web Services not Amazon.com. I run my production servers on AWS.

I'm buying a calculator for my son..... Casio fx-9750GII, warehouse sell it for $150.

Amazon sell it for $38USD. Total shipped cost $68NZD.

GST won't bother me.

New Zealand is still a ripoff.

See the second page https://www.beehive.govt.nz/sites/all/files/Online%20GST%20Q&As%20introduction%20of%20Bill%20161115.pdf
To reduce compliance costs they won't have to charge gst to gst registered entities

Oh ok, that's interesting.

Also, the problem I had above was because I was trying to sign in with an old account, so it was trying to sign me up again. Once I signed in with root credentials it worked fine. The confirmation email said "we have your VAT number", which I've sent to support as likely just a problem with their notification email.
