Mark: Interesting .. and also a WTF!?!?

http://politics.slashdot.org/story/11/05/01/1242259/US-Offered-To-Draft-NZ-3-Strikes-Law-Fund-Copyright-Initiative

Yeah, in the other thread it was widely speculated that the the bill was forced through to try and help a Free Trade Agreement with the US.  Seems like has almost been confirmed!

I have moved across the ditch.  Now residing in Melbourne as a VOIP/Video Technical Trainer/Engineer.

Not surprising in the least, America has become quite the corrupt plutocracy.

If you look at Australia who already have a managed er I mean "free" trade agreement with the US they haven't actually benefited from it.

In bilateral agreements with the US smaller countries get beat up and ripped off (google the details on the Vietnamese FTA with the US and what happened with Catfish imports).

The lobby industry is incredibly powerful in the US, subsidies for US farmers won't ever end.  Our imports will continue to be disadvantaged and in return we get draconian IP laws.

Read the wikileaks cables, the US position is to destroy: Co-op's like Fonterra, Pharamac and generic drugs, parallel importing, format shifting, fair use etc etc.  Our fair use laws will end up weaker than the US's own (already are imo).

It's a mistake to enter anything other than truly free multi-lateral agreements with the US eg: DOHA.
