So you want to pay for incoming calls and SMS's which is common in the USA and Canada with a non CPP business model?

tmobile as example charge US 5c to RECEIVE an SMS. You're signed their petition and are perfectly happy to pay this?

I stupidly signed the petition yesterday without doing research into the issue (and before seeing this thread). I've now sent an email requesting that my signature be removed. It'll be interesting to see the reaction to that :)

Agreed but perhaps by forcing the lowering the MTRs this sets the public expectation that call prices drop too. It would be untenable with the current publicity that if MTRs drop the public and media will expect call prices to drop too.

Except MTR costs in NZ are not excessive. MTR costs have pretty much halved in the past 3 years from the high 20's to 15c or under. This has not delivered cheaper calling.

Enforcement of MTR passthrough is the key here. That hasn't happened in the past and is unlikely to result from another small drop.

It's well known 2degrees want bill & keep and this campaign seems to be their motive to blindside people into signing a petition to support a move away from CPP.

Bill & keep is a proven model for local interconnects, particularly in NZ where local calls are free. It is a business model that has fundamental flaws and is not used by mobile carriers anywhere else.

I find it a bit hypocritical that 2degrees, who have an astonishingly low "mates rate" on their interconnect with Vodafone, are spouting about how rates need to be lower. Really? Well, Vodafone gave them lower rates, then they start screaming and throwing their toys whenever someone tries to make that public knowledge. I would have thought that announcing figures like those (Vodafone's already said they can, so cut the "we honour our non-disclosure agreements" bollocks) and pointing out how they can be viable and that they can result in lower costs would be the way to go. Huh. Funny, really.

What happens with Telstra in Australia, they use the bill and keep model, do they charge people to receive SMS?

Funny how Vodafone got a Bill and Keep interconnection agreement with it's "Vodafone at Home" offering.
Seems to be a rule for Vodafone but shaft anybody else that even looks like the competition.

No they do not use Bill and keep as a interconnect model.

And for all intent purposes becomes a fixed wireless solution.

Calls are locked down to the a predetermined area (such as the users property) which offers the exact same limitations a fixed line product has.
