djrm: a combination of the two is the best-fit scenario for most rural areas. Satellite to a node and Wimax from that node to a rural community - as 'QQ' points out 10mb shared around a few houses would be a far more cost effective strategy than laying fibre here, there and everywhere.

Excellent - this is what we need to approach the government with - if we can get their ear as at the moment they only have one adviser and he owns Farmside - Getting more corrupt as the day goes on!!

BartMan - I would prefer fibre and then outreach via wireless.

QQ - Can't comment on something that even isn't on offer yet. It is very easy to say all these super things about this new satellite service, but I want proof - ditch the dirt.

djrm: Fibre is cost-prohibitive for the distances involved and the number of connections per node. There are alternatives to farmside that farmside would not want you to know about...

Not so, I was talking about taking the wireless from the cable and then the wireless over the long distances. I am on a network that is connected to fibre some 30 kms away, and passes through a couple of radios on the way. This I believe is the technology for rural and areas with undulating terrain.

I am not asking Farmside for alternatives but QQ suggested that something was coming soon.

QQ: Sorry my friend you clearly don't know what you are talking about (or are you a Farmside customer if so i am sorry!)
With the new service you can have anything from 512k - 10mb downloads with VERY low contention - now why has the government or the telcos not been told about this??

Satellite is unattractive because of the high latency 1000ms+ and low speed. Iit's poorly suited for streaming, voip, gaming and a whole bunch of other things where wireless or mobile broadband are superior. HSPA has really come along quickly for example.

Fibre to the town centre or local school and then wireless or mobile/cellphone internet is a better solution imo.

Fibre to a town to where??? if you live in a rural community do you really think the government or a private company are going supply Fibre at over 10 million dollars per village???

1) Satellite can and will extend cellular coverage.

2) Satellite can and will supply outlaying schools and community's with broadband/voice.
(We) will offer good communications anywhere in NZ to all our tourist (VERY IMPORTANT TO YOU Townies as they are THE Biggest EXPORT WE HAVE!!!)

With our equipment you can expect a quality of service and around 500 - 600 m/s.

Wake up New Zealand to a new dawn called the 21st century!!
(Where is S Joyce??? is he looking or listening to anyone else other than Farmside and Telecom?)

This solution cold save the tax payer around 100 million dollars of what they have pledged to spend.
This solution will employ around 250 new staff.
Why are they not listening??

Stop listening to the farmsides/telecoms....
Their service has a latency of around 1,000 - 1,200 m/secs and you are quite correct this will effect voice etc.

Watch the press over the next few weeks......

QQ - I think you should have a lesson in wireless. Satelleite won't work on a southern facing property with no view to the north - not so with wireless, the signal can be bounced around all over the place. All you need with wireless is a place to connect to fibre then it can be sent over any distance with other radios inbetween. This is why wireless is ideaaly suited to all terrains over all distances.

QQ - Don't give me look in the newspapers over the next few weeks. If you are going to come on here spouting the virtues of such a system then give us facts now or come back when you have proof.

Don't be such a idiot. You have not proven your knowledge at all and if you are employed by this new company then I don't think its going to last long. Also you obviously don't know where the satellite is, okay not quite north, but I think close enough in a forum!!!

QQ: If you do choose to come back, and I hope you do, I think you'll find that providing more detailed technical info on your proposition will lead to a higher value discussion.
When I think about broadband these days, my concerns are availability, reliability, cost, QoS factors for VoIP, and upload speed - for things that we will increasingly like to do - such as backup to the cloud, and finally but very importantly - the quality and availability of customer service.
I'd be interested to hear how your proposed satellite offering delivers on those aspects.
Telling us to wait 2 weeks for a newspaper story is not that helpful. If you're looking to use geekzone as a method of raising a groundswell of public support, then you need to give us high quality info early, and stay engaged productively.
