Maverick is right CHORUS in their infinite wisdom have decided to build yet another replacement FTTH PSU, however it is really no better than the 1st and 2nd Attempts. This latest attempt will also fail as it does not address the issue of ?auto reboots? and "self electronic monitoring?. Then of course there is the issue of ECO waste with the unnecessary additional batteries going to land fills.

To get backup power to the RGW a simple 12v to 5v DC convertor (USB PSU) can be picked up from JARCAR or DSE for $20 ?that is the best retro fit option for existing APC/CYBERSHEILD units already installed with FTTH.

CHORUS know how to fix this but still operate on the basis that they can dictate the type of PSU consumers can buy. As I have said NBNco have stopped that and you can be absolutely sure that CFH will do the same here in NZ.

And now it is Public... This will be the device that will be retro fitted by Telecom Wholesale , it will do both the RGW and Fibre Honts, not a full all in one option for Alarming as well but does have a number of options.

Will support multiple voltages on the unit for different SP offerings in RGW

Maverick you are indeed well connected..…the thing about this device is that it’s just another PSU, new housing developers are not going to install this unit and an ALARM as well, in addition the public are not going to stand behind such waste.

I’m sorry but unless these new guys put a home alarm application on their device then it will not last in the new housing market very long, which by the way is the biggest FTTH growth sector on the move.

In my opinion Telecom has no place getting involved in home energy systems and FTTX power supplies they should stick with what they know best.

While I the face of it the claim that a small unknown company from Palmertston North can make broadband 50x faster sounds fantastic ...I suspect the real energy companies will have a good laugh !!

I for one want to help those Kiwi companies suceed not laugh at them.

The options around the replacement devices have been going on for quite some time as you well know , you also know what my personal feelings are on this... I would like to see a common unit that was capable of handling it all, power for Alarms, RGW and FTTH Hont equipment and have them all working together....

You again know that we have displayed this as an option with your own product when doing the initial testing on FTTH and pushed that we all liked this type of solution.

You also know that I have gone to bat with that opinion( but it is only a consumer of the FTTH products opinion), I actually disagree with you on Telecom having a say in power systems for Telco equipment though, I think they have every right, will this latest device cover all the requirements I would like to see, possibly not but in saying that it is not a bad unit at all for a small home Telco solution and adds something that the Integrated Alarm unit doesn't cover with internal wiring options etc.

This is aimed at a mass consumer level deployment for residential house retro fits that could help improve internet services within a residence as well as adding the backup options that I have been pushing pretty hard for in FTTH.

I can't comment on the functionality of the other parts of the unit or have no real in-depth knowledge of the product apart from the demo and Q & A time I had with RMS, I haven't tested it yet on our FTTH product ... I was supposed to get a test unit to test but delays prevented that

. But I can tell you that it is a hell of lot better option than is currently offered and my prime concern is have a reliable service when the power goes out.

Maverick you quite right again yes Telecom does have every right to get into energy systems it?s just that the board of Telecom and the shareholders are going to think it?s a hair brained idea, and someone is going to look very silly.

Just a correction for the record I do not promote any particular product, my position is to promote the idea that home backup power systems should be based on a existing Alarm solution. Currently I am working with quite a few Alarm manufacturers across New Zealand and Australia and they all compete with one another my role is to help transition them into FTTH and IP ALARMs in general. I only supply those products I know work.

If this new product that Telecom CHORUS is promoting wants integration to the majority of New Zealand and Australian Alarm monitoring stations, then I would be happy to assist by providing the necessary protocols.

What more do you know about this new product can it really speed things 50x ? LoL

Why stop at two UPS's hey lets just install a FARM :-)

1,2,3 UPS .....sorry but they are dumb and wasteful energy wise. and frankly do not cut it.

A single Home battery is the answer and the ALARM power supply is required to ensure such a battery is in good condition and can alert the Home owner or service agent via TXT/EMAIL to replace when it fails.

Remember all electronic devices run on DC and UPS converts AC to DC to AC for those appliances

What you are suggesting is using an UPS to convert AC to DC to AC and to DC devices !@#$%!!

How about just AC to DC ....dolsen ? please do not complicate our lives with a UPS

Yeah, I must admit, I thought about the possibility of the backup power supply being dc out and started to write about the possibility of it being 2 different voltages (the only reason I could see for not having the two devices powered). If the backup power supply is 12v, I would put a 7805 reg to power both devices of the 12v line. If the ONT is 5V, I might put a dc/dc converter to step up the voltage to 12 volts, but, I'd probably just put a ups on there, because, quite frankly, I don't really care if it's more wasteful, I'm more interested in runtime (having laptops and wireless).

You are obviously quite keen on having the alarm being the power supply for all of these other devices, but, I don't have a problem with having them separate. I do acknowledge that having the notification of the battery condition is useful, not that I want to pay an alarm company for this.

Does running the ont / router have any negative effects on the performance of the alarm system (other than reduced run time in the event of a mains failure / switch off at the switchboard)? Given that the location of the ont / router is probably more known than the alarm panel (unless the intention is to co-site them), what happens if someone breaks in, goes to the ont and makes a hard short across the supply line powering it? Presumably, this won't pull down the power to the sensors / bell box etc and the alarm will continue to work correctly? It is possible to configure the power supply to it so that this is the case.
I'd also expect the alarm to continue to work fine if someone put 230VAC back up it as well.

I know there are some other things you could do, and, this isn't much easier than those other things, but, it seems more obvious if it catches on.

Firstly in terms of smart power supplies, yes I am keen on using the Alarm system because most new homes have them fitted. Also FTTH housing developers are indeed now beginning to co site. See link below or our site under alarmnz-products-broadband for sample FTTx images available from various suppliers. Housing developers are now requesting that CHORUS does not provide a battery backup because they have now realised what they are currently providing it is not fit for purpose.

The Alarm loves running the ONT/RGW because during a power cut it can maintain connectivity to the monitoring station or remote email server to send messages to the Home owner. The nett effect is POSITIVE and the Alarm Power Supply can handle all sorts of extreme electrical behaviour, remember these devices have been in production since the 1950’s and they have learnt a bit in that time.

In terms of power supply voltages 12/5v is the standard for now, currently all FTTx Alarm Power Supply units (APSU) in production are 12v based however provide USB power via a step down device (similar to one most of us carry in our car to charge the Mobile or iPOD.)

I disagree about installing an even bigger UPS , people do care about multiple batteries and ECO waste. Most Laptops have batteries and desktops are dead anyway so common sense will prevail and whether you have an alarm or not right now you can purchase the basic power supply component to keep your FTTx communications network humming.

Nah, most people don't give a rats about multiple batteries and waste. They just want a service that works and keeps on working.

Unfortunately the one in your picture won't work if the power goes out.

You've got a cordless phone and no backup power for it. Doh! :)
