I say nationalise Telecom, Vodafone, 2Degrees, TelstraClear and all fixed line ISPs, plus Sky too while we are at it. Why not also make all banks merge into Kiwi bank too.

I am sure that significant savings will be had by having it run by the Govt that will be passed onto the NZ Tax Payer. Plus this will help drive innovation since there will be this huge pool of money to invest.

North Korea has set a good blueprint on how to do it, lets follow in their footsteps.

And after Kiwibank is sold back to the Australians we will celebrate the creation of a new "Think Big" banking monopoly, perhaps combined with a Development Finance division to ensure it takes on as much risk as possible. We want the eventual collapse to make a big enough splash of course so that it can be bailed out by taxpayers again.

Time to find a new industry!

Some of the OP posts were valid suggestions, but a lot of them were just crazy. Without any thought about how a company actually makes a profit.

While I agree that this list of ideas seems aimed to wipe out all ISPs and Telecos in NZ it does raise the point of how the general public view the industry and the lack of knowledge of how it all works. Maybe there should be a larger focus in the future, not just from the government but also from ISPs and Telcos themselves to educate the public on why you are charged what you are and why there is no such thing as a "free" local call.

Out of curiosity is anyone else making any submissions?

I personally believe there is a misunderstanding where technology people think that IT / Telecommunications is somehow devoid of normal business constraints. This is where a lot of the misconception comes from I believe. Business is just that, business. Businesses need to make a profit to survive and pay its staff and shareholders.

When you go into the supermarket do you complain that the way the supermarket isn't configured to your liking as you have to go and walk through all the isles to find the items you want, if you are willing to pay more then I am sure they would organise the supermarket just to your liking rather than what suits the majority of their customers. (Read bandwidth capacity).

Do you also complain that the most commonly used items or the items that the manufactures are prepared to subsidise to get into the eye line are frequently accessible when other less common items are on the bottom or top shelf (Read transparent caching, or cache farms provided by the ISPs).

Lastly do you complain that you have to drive to your local supermarket rather than having it right outside your door. (Read distance from exchange and local DSLAMs, and location of Cell Sites for coverage)

Perhaps closer to home, do we all complain to MF about having advertising on Geekzone since that is a part of what keeps this forum alive. Or are we subscribers and help fund this great forum? Perhaps Geekzone should all go subscriber only (no, I am not serious here) since nothing in this world is free (well apart from Air maybe)

I can personally extrapolate between the business of a Supermarket and a lot of the business of running an ISP/Telco. Others may not be able to join the dots. But I think I did a fair job at comparisons between the two very different markets.

I think it is a pretty good comparison to give a basic understanding. The problem is to many people are unaware of what goes on in the background.

It's no different to petrol, people are always complaining about the price of the stuff yet don't register that someone has the fund the muti-million dollar explorations, the drilling, the refining, the shipping etc. As far as I'm concerned as long as fuel remains cheaper per litre than Coke I'm happy.

As seasoned industry professionals I think it's always best to mock users who make ill informed suggestions rather than doing our best to educate the users and explain why things are the way they are.

In choosing the mocking approach we best ensure the user doesn't come back to learn more but chooses to spend his money on our high value services while keeping quiet.

We should encourage this approach as it may also help us in limiting the number of submissions that members of the public may make to government agencies who don't even bother to send you a quick email to say thanks for your submission anyway.

In closing I'd like to just suggest to the OP that if he doesn't like the way things are done in .nz then he should spend more time asking seemingly endless insane questions on public forums and contribute to the solution by just throwing a bit of cat5 over his fence and sharing his telephone service with a neighbour.

I think the issue here is that the Op has actaully put in a submission which seems to totally lack a understanding of the industry so now this submission will have to be looked at and really is a waste of time and totally off track IMO.

Make no mistake he has ever right to do so but perhaps before putting together submissions you need to have an understanding of what the factors are and how the industry is put together including commercial realities, just becuase you can connect a PC and configure a router to get an internet connection does not make you an expert in the IT / Telco world, I believe submissions should come if you have researched the topic and have an understanding of what you are asking for not just a I would like this.

Our problem is that I think we try to explain and this industry is pretty indepth with a large number of factors involved and to be frank unless you work in the industry most people will never fully understand the business, all most people seem to want and demand is faster, larger data and lower costs as seen by the the Ops submission.... and really it does get to be a bit over the top when we see things like this

The OPs submission isn't a waste of time, it took me all over 2 minutes to read his suggestions and gives a good presentation of the level of understanding of the market by some people.

I wonder how many people are of his views but are simply to scared to speak up for fear of the obvious ridicule?

I know absolutely nothing about dairy farming. I may have been on a dairy farm once when I was a child, and I think that milk comes from cows...

Right, with that out of the way.... The cost of milk is FAR TOO HIGH. It should be cheaper, after all, I'm the customer, right?

Now, I don't really believe my opinions on the cost of milk should be taken seriously, especially if I was to start suggesting some specific changes to the dairy farming industry.

Please explain why broadband is so different.

I vote in public elections if I feel I understand the differences between candidates or policies well enough. I'm not joking...

And please go back and read the OP... The person was making specific recommendations like requiring ISPs to retain dialup untio 2020, and requiring that dialup had to be a minimum of 56k to be advertised as such.

If, because I felt the cost of milk was too high, I made recommendations that they should simply get twice as much milk from each cow then I'd expect to be crucified for it.

The issue is that it seems many people who are able to setup an ADSL router or build a PC also believe they understand the regulatory, economic and technical environment behind BB in NZ.

So if I was to comment INTELLIGENTLY on the cost of milk, I'd try to limit it to something like...

"As a milk consumer, I have noticed that milk prices have increased at much higher than the rate of inflation over the last few years - while I don't understand the reasons for this, it affects me because as a staple, it's taking up an increasing proportion of my food budget and I'm having to cut down in other areas and sometimes go without milk".

That could be accurate, and limits my submission to what I am familiar with. It doesn't stride into areas I know nothing about.

No information is better than bad information.
