The Telecom demerge only happens if a UFB deal is done.

Ya, so it makes much more sense to keep Telecom the way it is and put the fibre in independent LFC hands in my view.

What they've done so far looks fantastic to me.

For those that have fronted up to this thread and bitched about streets being dug up, well just be ready no matter who gets the contract if you want fibre to your door then expect major disruption to your streets.

Unlike our Oz neighbours Telecom by and large never pitted and piped (ducted) in local cable distribution, instead they directly trenched in, so to put fibre in means ripping up the streets all over again no matter who get the contract.

Even if this means the first few billion is simply spent replicating Telecom's existing FTTN network to roll out FTTH?

Yip Steve, I do see your point. I don't know. It's problematic which ever way you go. It's all just a big mess that I can see we're going to be paying for, for another 3 decades.

We only just finished paying off our parents 'think big' projects didn't we? ...or are we still paying for those?

Is there anything stopping the LFC's from buying/leasing dark strands from Telecom? Either way remeber this is Vector for Auckland build, Telecom can still get other areas

Most sensible thing I've read all day.

I agree that pushing the fibre out to the suburbs when it's already there in bulk because of NGN is just silly.

That would make sense, keep T as it is, lease the fibre and left T push it's own in later if it wants/needs.

As I understand it nothing, but at what cost, this is the crunch, I see citylink have now released GigE transport at a more competitive rate based on recent changes in the landscape, hopefully T will follow.

One would think that Telecom wouldn't price it higher than the LFC's cost of running the fibre divided by it's commercial lifespan

antoniosk:

No it's ok, because it's a lines company everything is different. Residents love more power.

A high % of the greater Auckland regions power lines are underground, being able to cheaply string fibre on power poles is not relevant to many suburbs in the region.

Yeah because they are a charity and shareholders would be fine with that... oh wait

Vector when installing power lines underground has apparently put in a lot of ducting in anticipation of use for fibre over the years.

I was more referring to the fact that the LFC's should at that point look at rolling their own cable. and profit would still come from Telecom because they would still have other strands running NGN/Whatever :)

Telecom never built its FTTN network in a way thats useful for an passive optical open access FTTP network. Cabinets that are to be built in a FTTP programme do not need active equipment, power, or even splitters but in some network topologies really are essentual only patching and slack management. FTTN neworks use lower fibre counts and were unlikely to be planned with the 4 cores per dwelling that CFH is now talking about, so I can't see how FTTN can simply switch to a passive distribution without massive capacity upgrades and new ducts.

The ideal fibre cabinet locations would likely be different anyway, since the design is based around a longer reach without signal degradation over distance.

You should have more info on this than I do, but still feeders to each node are only a small part of FTTP costs. Most of the time and cost is the distribution to individual dwellings as implied by Cyril. Telecom will need an agreement with the new fibreco for greenfield developments anyway, but they appear set to compete either way since copper loops were going to stay with chorus after fibre assets split away...

Time to find a new industry!

Each cabinet has 180 cores run to the pit doesn't it? Sure that's what Cyril told me the other day.

You just whack a FDF next to the Whisper cabinet and put your splitters in there an then jump off to your houses for the last 300m to 2000m.
