A 1M connection would probably let you websurf for general things.

A 5M connection has enough for a full-HD video stream with a little left over. Plenty of xDSL out there probably runs at that rate still, especially on the fringes.

The 30-50Mbit brackets probably cover VDSL, low rate fibre and some RBI variations as well. That's enough for a few HD streams and other activity all at once. I'd go so far as to say that (currently) that's more than 'enough'  I think 'enough' is likely to be somewhere between 5Mbit and 50Mbit/s 'right now'.  For a typical household.  Remember TV is still available over satellite and terrestrial broadcast, remember then that most internet service is also subject to a bit of time-division.. not everyone's using all of it, all at once, you get economies of scale in terms of the number of users and when they place demand on the system.

You should at least double or treble those numbers to allow for households, not just single users. 😉

I'd suggest you'd probably be needing a reliable 15-20Mbit to run a rural business or home office these days.

And while everyone concentrates on the headline speeds, the typical RBI data cap is already below the monthly "average" for the country as a whole.

:-) It wasn't that long ago that my 4-person household was running on a 40Mbit VDSL line without any major issues, and it wasn't much longer before that that 7Mbit ADSL was enough. At that point we had enough bandwidth to support a single HD stream (Netflix) whilst others in the house did low-intensity websurfing.

I basically figure that at least 5Mbit per user is minimal now in my use case - we're quite tech-heavy.  Not everyone needs those size pipes, which is why I am amused when I see the indignation on some GZ posts...  it's a biased lens that geeks will use when evaluating this stuff!

I'd kill for that. Figuratively, of course. 😀

I'd agree that 5Mbit is okay as a bare minimum per user as things stand. Quite what "high quality internet" for "all New Zealanders" looks like in 10 years time, I don't know. But I'm willing to guess it'll be way more than 5Mbit per user.

I don't think you need to be "tech-heavy" or stereotypically Geekzone. You just need teenagers.

My bandwidth requirements are due to explode exponentially:

2yrs: 1 teenager

4yrs: 2 teenagers

7yrs: 3 teenagers (unless the first one buggers off to Uni. And even then, holidays).

As things stand, I'm totally screwed.

lol, yes, me too. I moved up to 100/30 UFB about 2 years ago, and it's enough that we can have four HD video streams (one each for all of us), downloads, SIP phone, Spotify and so on, all happening at once without issue. If anything the next bottleneck will be Wifi.  But I guess my point is that if you are in the rural fringes where services aren't as fast or as cheap, there's a reality at play that you can get away with a lot less in return for the pro's of your location.

Me, I like my urban services.
