Yes, but get SIP and VPN traffic up to 50% and I bet you'll see blocking quick smart

Yes that's how I understood it too.  What it's all basically doing is just holding up the base price of calls.

That's why moving calls to data is important for users to do if call prices are bothering them.

This is why I don't think it should be regulated anymore, it doesn't need to be.  The consumer already has a technical choice that they can exercise.

Now is one or all of the mobile providers was blocking Skype, SIP, HTTP and VPN access then we might have something we need to look at.  But they're not.

D

The only genuinely affordable data in NZ right now is isolated to Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Queenstown.

The rest of the country is a long way behind when it comes to being able to easily shift calls to data.

And when did Skype start charging connection fees? Shame. Bring on Google mobile please.

Not sure what you're on about with Skype, but isn't Vodafone and XT universal data across the country?  Did I miss something?

Why?

Data is the future for mobile co's.  If they start messing with it now they'll drive customers to wifi faster than you can say 'oh crap'.

I use SIP now on wifi everywhere but when I'm driving, riding my bike or walking...

I hate walking...

Do I really want to take calls while I'm driving or riding a bike?!

In the mall I have McD's.

So the opportunity to sell me something really is getting less and less....  you want to screw with me?!

Ok, noted with the comments re VOIP, however, many in NZ have only just gotten to grips with sending a text message.........

I need clarification if anyone can oblige (take a big breath, this is a long sentence.....):

If the fixed line retailer does not drop rates in line with the MTR's and indeed 'pockets the difference', would this not drive the consumer away from fixed lines and into the mobile arena where the MTR's have now been regulated to maximum levels?

Skype now charges connection fees on calls.

One out of the three major mobile networks in the country has affordable data plans that can support internet telephony. Then there is Vodafone and XT.

Smartphone uptake is much lower in reality than smartphone users think it actually is. While I love your vision, the fact is the bulk of the population are years behind this.

I'm sure we've had this conversation before too. Data isn't magically free just by virtue of being data. If traditional voice revenue fell off a cliff then you'd see the data costs go up to compensate pretty quick. Mobile networks actually really truly do cost money to run.

Neither is VoIP some sort of magic bullet. All carriers use VoIP internally, not often SIP but still VoIP in the general sense. It can save some on transmission, but it doesn't make the network free either.

You might be ok to be out of touch while wandering between hotspots but most people complain if they're out of coverage for more than about 30s. Likewise, expecting people generally to make the effort to run SIP clients on their smart phones is ludicrous. You and me are in the minority. Most normal people have $99 Nokias, not iPhones or Androids. To most people, SIP is what you do with a glass of wine.

EDIT: Snap! :-)

Skype to skype calls are still data only though and everyone I know has skype on something they can use.  I have customers who only talk to me on skype.  One guy I'm not even sure he knows how to text or make calls!

I've used VF data for skype and had it working just fine on a E220 and a laptop.

No idea what XT's like, but don't really care, that company is toast eventually...  it's just on a race to the bottom and I really don't see it's fly fishing boss turning it round, to many people in there without a clue I suspect...  but I really don't know.

At roughly 30MB per hour for a G.729 call all networks offer affordable rates for VoIP traffic compared to regular voice calls.

Your world is nice, and I'd love to live there too but it's "out of this world". Your situation of having a circle of contacts that use Skype, etc. is just not the norm.

With regards mobile data costs I'll spell it out since you haven't got it thus far despite strong hints. Mobile broadband costs are expensive outside of 2 Degrees. I struggle to stay under 512Mb let alone 250Mb or even 120Mb per month, and that's purely for non-VoIP usage.

Only 2 Degrees has anything remotely competitive for 1Gb+ plans.

Thanks for that. I didn't realise the usage was so light but as per previous post I struggle to remain under current caps anyway let alone adding VoIP data.

But that's interesting to know that the typical usage is only 30Mb/hr, thanks.

ARPU is dropping every time I read the stats.  Voice, data, what ever.  Personally my spend has gone nuts...  I'd love to know what the cost price is on those 8150s.

SaltyNZ: You might be ok to be out of touch while wandering between hotspots but most people complain if they're out of coverage for more than about 30s.

Oh, I'm not out of touch, but I'm just not spending any money staying in touch.  People emailing and skypeing me while I'm moving does cost me money, bugger all, but yes I'm paying for it.

But I really don't spend much time moving between hot spots and neither do most of the people I know.

First, the figures on Nokia are dropping like a rock.

I agree about iPhones, an elitist club that I can't/don't afford to be part of.

However Androids just haven't quite got traction here in .nz yet, but 300k a week?!

Everyone I show mine to is now considering getting one of some sort.

I completely agree with you that we're not there yet with SIP, but my point was only that we don't need regulation because there is a consumer choice there to be had if you want it.

D

Sure, so the answer is to do more to get more people in the 2Deg areas using it.  I changed because it drives the market.

It's really not hard to fix.
