ajw: More can read on this topic here.

http://www.comcom.govt.nz/mobile-termination-access-services-std/

Including the issue of off/on net price discrimination.

Holly crap what a load of bs.  How about we just write a 3 page doc on what mobile phone to buy and how to configure it to run SipDroid and then help people set up peered Astrisk boxes?

The whole issue then just goes away.

D

Some more detail.

SaltyNZ:Except for the vast majority of the population who don't want or can't afford a phone that runs SipDroid.

Sure.  And those people will keep affording to pay the higher prices.

As people keep pointing out to me, technology isn't free.

If you invest in a smarter phone you can recover that cost by using it effectively.

But "using it effectively" requires a level of knowledge many customers don't have or don't care to acquire. They remain in the status quo.

Depends how much price pressure you put them under.

So MTR is good for keeping the price up while alternatives drop in price.

Twitter is very cool application in my view...  just tell all your personal networks you can afford a flash new phone just on what you save your mum and dad on their monthly toll bill.

I've often heard of students getting rewarded because they saved family a few dollars...  did the price of petrol go down today?

Why they should they be required to feel under pressure? Is it too much to ask that people who want a phone that can last more than half a day on batteries, or is able to survive falling onto the floor once or twice, or has buttons that they can see and touch without a microscope should still be able to have reasonably priced services?

Basically, your position is, if you don't want a smartphone, then you have no right to complain about prices. Or am I missing something here? ;-)

iPad Pro 11" + iPhone 15 Pro Max + 2degrees 4tw!

Yip, I'm sure that's exactly what I said word for word about 5 pages back.

D... or perhaps I said that we just don't need the MTR rules anymore because those who choose to use a smart phone will level the playing field anyway.

Smart phone use is growing hand over fist.

Exactly, which unfortunately makes me value your opinion less. Sad but true.

Ok, we're so going to get busted by the mods or being OT and personal attacks here...  but that did make me laugh!

Steve's great, a bit short with some of his answers, but you get where he's coming from.

A 30 minute fixed to mobile call only costs $1 when calling a Vodafone mobile on a Vodafone business fixed line plan.
Considering Telecom own the fixed line infrastructure why is the cost so cheap. So much for pass through.
I guarantee it would cost a lot more to call a Telecom or 2 degrees mobile.
Surely another case of off/on net price discrimination.

Why have you only chosen to complain about Vodafone offering this? Telecom have been offering $1 fixed calling for up to 60 minutes to Telecom mobiles since ~2005.

Vodafone can't compete with Telecom's 60 minute offering because of the way wholesale lines and NCA access are charged, but no doubt felt obliged to offer a deal like this to remain competitive with Telecom.

The fact these deals really shows up the Commerce Commission when they had had fundamental issues with Vodafone's $12 addon which results in in being pulled, yet ignore these sorts of offerings that have been in the marketplace for ages.

Self explanatory. Vodafone is a fixed line retailer aren't they. Who says they will  pass on reductions in wholesale mobile termination rates.

http://forum.vodafone.co.nz/topic/7262-mobile-regulation-%E2%80%93-who-will-win-and-who-will-lose/

"In its submission, released by the Commerce Commission, Vodafone says the most likely outcome of the Commission’s draft proposal for regulation is that fixed operators will benefit from lower wholesale mobile termination costs, and mobile operators will lose significant revenue, with customer benefits left very uncertain.

“With the current proposal the winners are likely to be fixed operators with a huge transfer of wealth from the mobile market into the fixed,” says Hayden Glass, Vodafone’s General Manager of Public Policy.
Our approach also addresses the risk of simply transferring wealth from mobile operators (Vodafone and 2degrees) to fixed operators (Telecom, TelstraClear and others) and allows the Commission to monitor whether or not consumers are getting the benefits of reduced MTRs. If they are then rate drops continue, if not then they can be stopped and reviewed.”
