I bought a Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830 mobile phone last month and it came pre-installed with the Optus proprietary applications and other software. I bought this from www.gadgetsonline.co.nz and while I am happy about the price and service I am getting more and more annoyed by the Optus rubbish on my phone. Optus is not even a mobile service provider in NZ - it is an Australian provider. The Optus software is highjacking my Facebook access (I get regular warning messages), cluttering up my apps folder and burning up my power and storage and just generally get in the way of my easily using the phone.
Has anyone else had this issue and have they found a way of removing this stuff? Everyhting I have Googled has left me in some doubt as to whether 'rooting' my phone to get rid of it is safe and/or straight-forward. So, does anyone have a straightforward and safe method of getting the Optus stuff off my mobile. And, unrelated, why is the typeface on this website so damn small, the smallest I have ever had to deal with - thats annoying me at the moment as well

The only way to remove the proprietary applications will to be using a root file explorer to remove them (root access required). Otherwise the other option is to flash a different firmware onto the device (eg a generic non-branded one)

Both of these are reasonably straightforward but it will involve voiding your warranty.

If you're interested I can write a guide on how to do it for you (unless someone else beats me to it)

What's the main risk in voiding warranty? ie. what can go wrong? And do things go wrong with the Galaxy Ace?

You could always root it, uninstall what you don't want, and then "un-root" it.

it can be quite daunting to root a phone as there is so much info out there and it looks really hard but if you read up on it and follow what is written it is easy enough.

Once you root you should look at custom rom the differences are immediately obvious.

As to warrantt, as was suggested you can unroot so it doesn't matter

XDA forums are full of info so find a thread on teh Ace and read up on it for a while then go for it you won't be disappointed

Thanks for your help guys. I guess I should be brave and just do it. Tho I would hate to be without my phone cos of a stuff up

once you get it rooted you can do a backup which saves it as it is at that point so can restore at any time and is a must.

There are plenty of people on here that are willing to help so have a read up and if you have a question just ask as it saves a lot of anxiety.

start here as it has all the help, hints, roms etc that you can ever ask for. You will notice that those that have all the problems mostly don't read or follow instructions.
